Today we’d like to introduce you to Alton Jamison.
Hi Alton, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Alton originates from Hopewell, a small town in Central Virginia. He grew up in a single-parent home while his father was in and out of prison. His mother struggled to take care of him while he tried his best to become a man despite his father’s absence. Throughout his life, he faced numerous obstacles and challenges. However, early on, Alton developed the principle that he is bigger and better than his environment. A driven leader, Alton served as Class President all four years in high school and lettered in football. From playing football, he received the coveted Bill Mackey award for exhibiting a high level of character both on and off the field. He also performed in an award-winning choral ensemble, Mixed Company, under the direction of the renowned Ms. Taylor. For his accomplishments, he received the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) Youth of the Year Award for the State of Virginia.
He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology and co-founded two organizations while attending Old Dominion University and was recognized in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Alton was also a founding member of Old Dominion’s first Black Male Summit. While in college, Alton worked as a Campus Manager for an online textbook company, VarsityBooks.com and spearheaded a marketing campaign to motivate college students to purchase textbooks online. He managed 10 employees and was recognized as the top marketer in the entire company.
He obtained his Master of Arts in Practical Theology from Regent University and also completed courses to become a certified Life and Success Coach through Transformational Leadership Coaching. Alton was a successful engineer for Northrop Grumman Newport News where he led a team of 10 personnel of varying disciplines including construction, design, engineering and testing which decreased total operating cost of the drain collecting systems by over $10.5 million from the previous ship design. He worked with United Parcel Services (UPS) as an Industrial Engineer Supervisor for the Richmond Preload operation, the largest preload in the Virginia District (yearly operating budget $7 million, approximately 300 employees).
He is a two time-International Speech Contest Champion (District Level) hosted by Toastmasters International. A successful entrepreneur, he is the owner of several businesses. Alton was recognized by Inside Business Journal, as one of the Top Forty under 40 in Hampton Roads, VA. Alton believes in the power of being an entrepreneur and recognizes the importance of identifying the creative ability that we all have within us. Alton’s creative ability also carries over into print. His work has been featured in several books, “Rekindling the Human Spirit, That’s My Story and I’m Sticking To It” and “Brother To Brother-Motivation For Young African American Men.” In addition, his inspirational memoir “No More Handcuffs: 5 Keys To Removing The Mental Handcuffs From Your Life!” He is also the author 4 additional books. Alton’s passion is to free organizations and individuals from their mental barriers (or ‘handcuffs’) to achieve peak performance and success. However, his greatest accomplishment is marrying his college math tutor, TaShawnda Jamison, and together they have two beautiful children.
