Hi Austin , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Modern Day Roofing started with a simple idea: homeowners deserved a better experience when replacing their roofs. Too often, the roofing industry is associated with poor communication, unpredictable schedules, messy jobsites, and contractors who disappear once the work is complete. I wanted to build a company that approached the entire process differently.
From the beginning, our goal has been to do things “The Modern Day Way.” That means educating homeowners instead of pressuring them, communicating clearly, allowing customers to choose an installation date that works for them, protecting their property, completing most roofs in one day, and leaving the jobsite cleaner than we found it. We also made the decision to build our own in-house crews and team rather than sacrificing quality or consistency for faster growth.
Like most businesses, we started small and learned a lot along the way. Growth did not happen overnight. It came from showing up, keeping our word, taking care of people, and continually improving our processes. Much of our success has been built through referrals, repeat customers, and homeowners sharing their experiences with friends and neighbors.
Today, Modern Day Roofing serves homeowners throughout the New River Valley, Roanoke Valley, and surrounding Southwest Virginia communities. We have grown into a GAF Master Elite® contractor and earned GAF President’s Club recognition, including 3-Star status an achievement reached by only a select group of roofing contractors nationwide (in 2026 we are one of 123 contractors). While those accomplishments mean a great deal to us, I am most proud of the team we have built and the trust our community places in us.
As we continue to grow, the mission remains the same: raise the standard for what homeowners should expect from a roofing and exterior contractor. We want every customer to feel informed, respected, and confident that their home is being cared for by people who genuinely stand behind their work.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not always been a smooth road. Building a company from the ground up comes with plenty of challenges, and many of them change as the business grows.
In the beginning, the biggest challenge was earning trust. Roofing is an industry where homeowners are understandably cautious, and we had to prove that we were going to do what we said, stand behind our work, and still be there after the job was finished. That trust was built one homeowner and one project at a time.
As the company grew, the challenges shifted. We had to learn how to build the right team, develop dependable systems, maintain clear communication, and ensure that the customer experience remained consistent across every department. Growth can expose every weakness in a business, so we have had to be willing to look honestly at what was not working and make changes even when those changes were difficult.
There are also challenges that come with the roofing industry itself. Weather can change an installation schedule overnight, material and labor costs fluctuate, and homeowners are often making a major investment during an already stressful time. Balancing those realities while still delivering the experience we promise requires constant planning and communication.
One of the greatest lessons I have learned is that growth is not simply about completing more roofs. It is about building a company that can grow without losing the standards, relationships, and values that made people trust us in the first place. We have made mistakes, faced setbacks, and learned some lessons the hard way, but each challenge has helped us become a stronger and more disciplined company.

We never want to become so focused on growth that homeowners begin to feel like numbers.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Some of my favorite childhood memories are of working alongside my dad and learning the roofing and contracting trade from him. My family says I have been on a roof since I was around six years old, with my dad’s help and supervision, of course.
At that age, I did not realize those experiences were laying the foundation for what I would eventually build. I was simply spending time with my dad, watching how he worked, and learning to take pride in doing a job correctly. Looking back now, those early memories mean even more because they shaped my work ethic, my appreciation for the trade, and ultimately the vision behind Modern Day Roofing.
