Hidden Gems: Meet Brigitte Kamga of Meke’s Kitchen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brigitte Kamga.

Hi Brigitte, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It started when I was in primary school, growing up in Cameroon. Every summer I would make beignets to earn money for back to school supplies. My older sister had already turned it into a small business, and watching her planted something in me early on. I continued to learn, and it stayed with me.

When I came to the United States, I started making beignets for community events. The recipe was traditional, the same way it has always been made back home in Cameroon. But over time I began thinking about how to share this food with people from all different backgrounds, people who had never grown up with it. That is where the Meke’s Kitchen version was born. I started developing flavor combinations and toppings that would make the beignet accessible and exciting to anyone, regardless of where they came from. What started as something familiar to my community became something that could bring in everyone else too.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the early challenges was developing a recipe that was consistent enough to deliver the same experience every single time. A beignet made for family feels different from one made to order for a customer who has never tried one before. The standard has to be higher, and getting there took time and repetition.

Customer communication and logistics were also areas I had to work through early on. Building a reservation process that was smooth and making sure every customer felt informed from the moment they ordered to the moment they picked up their tray. Those were challenges I took seriously, worked through intentionally, and continue to refine. I am always looking for ways to make the experience better for the people who choose to order from us.

As you know, we’re big fans of Meke’s Kitchen. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Meke’s Kitchen is a reservation-only home kitchen in Centreville, Virginia specializing in gourmet African beignets. A beignet is a warm, pillowy fried dough, and a staple snack across west and central Africa. Every order is handmade and fried fresh the day of pickup. Nothing is made in advance, nothing sits. Customers can choose from seven flavors, and pick it up knowing it was made specifically for them that same day.

What sets Meke’s Kitchen apart is the heart behind every order. I genuinely believe that my ability to cook is a gift from God, and I do not take that lightly. 1 Peter 4:10 says “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” That verse is the foundation of this business. I cook to serve people, and everything about the way Meke’s Kitchen operates from the care, the freshness, the personal touch, flows from that.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Patience, listening, and putting the customer first. When you are patient, you take the time to truly understand what someone needs. When you listen, you catch the details that matter like flavor preference, a special occasion, or a first-time customer who is unsure about what to order. And when you prioritize the customer, every decision you make becomes easier because you already know what the right answer is.

That approach has shaped everything from how I handle reservations to how I respond when something does not go perfectly. People remember how you made them feel, and I want every person who orders from Meke’s Kitchen to feel like they mattered.
