Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Elwell.
Kevin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Kevin is the owner and photographer for Get aHead Shot, a Northern Virginia based business that is focussed on creating compelling headshots for busy business professionals. After a 40 year career in serving the aerospace and Intelligence Community as a contractor, he started his commercial business in 2019 and has built it up into a thriving studio. Kevin is a participating member of the Headshot Crew and is was recognized as an Associate by the greatest headshot photographer in the world, Peter Hurley out of New York City.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Building a business from no-customers to six figures has been hard. The struggle is to continually get myself out there and meet new people. Now with AI, the business of photography is that much more difficult. OTOH, AI has also been a useful tool.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Get aHead Shot?
i do headshots, portraits, event photography, especially headshots, and i’m one of the top ten best headshot photographers in the dc metro area. i’m most proud of the fact that I have earned “associate” status with Peter Hurley, my teacher and mentor for headshots. he is arguably the greatest headshot photographer in the world.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
there are a lot of very talented and artistic photographers out there that won’t make it because they haven’t figured out how to market themselves. I’m still learning, but have come a long way. Learn the business side of your craft with as much rigor as you’ve devoted to your art.
