Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Lutz.
Hi Sara, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into professional animal care began with a deeply personal crisis. I have loved animals my entire life, but my true path was forged 11 years ago when my cat survived a severe fall from a tree and became paraplegic. Committing to his round-the-clock care as a special needs pet—which included expressing his bladder multiple times a day—completely transformed my relationship with animal wellness. It revealed a resilience and a calling in me that I couldn’t ignore.
Inspired by that experience, I chose to dedicate myself to the field professionally, spending the next seven years building a robust foundation in animal medical care, emergency response, and shelter leadership. I worked for four years as a Veterinary Assistant and also served on the ASPCA National Field Response Team, deploying across the country to set up temporary emergency shelters and provide daily care for animal victims of natural disasters and cruelty cases. Following this, I spent three years as the Animal Care Manager for the Charlottesville Albemarle SPCA (CASPCA). Managing a well-known, high-volume no-kill shelter, I was directly responsible for the safety, humane treatment, and overall well-being of up to 150+ felines and 60+ canines at any given time, while simultaneously leading a team of 15 staff members.
While shelter and rescue work was incredibly rewarding, it was also intensely demanding. After stepping away briefly to regroup, I quickly realized I couldn’t stay away from what I was born to do. To scratch that persistent itch for animal care on my own terms, I founded Sara Lutz Pet Services.
Initially, I started as a solo provider, fully dedicating my time and schedule to accommodating local pet owners whenever and wherever I was needed. However, Charlottesville residents quickly recognized the rare level of clinical, rescue, and large-scale management expertise I brought to the table, and demand rapidly outpaced what I could handle alone.
To continue providing that elite standard of care without turning families away, the business evolved. Today, Sara Lutz Pet Services has grown into a thriving, full-time operation backed by a dedicated team of independent contractors. Because of my background managing staff and animals at the CASPCA, I am able to seamlessly coordinate a team of sitters who share my uncompromising standards. This expansion has allowed us to scale our reach throughout the area while maintaining the deeply personal, family-like relationships with clients that inspired me to start this journey in the first place.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road, but the obstacles have been invaluable because they forced me to evolve from a solo caretaker into a true business owner. Every challenge we’ve faced has pushed us to find better solutions.
The first major hurdle was building a team I could actually trust to represent my brand. Early on, finding good, reliable independent contractors who shared my high clinical and shelter-tested standards was incredibly difficult. I resolved this by completely refining my hiring process. I moved to much more thorough background and reference checks, overhauled my interview and screening methods, and began providing deeper, more specialized training to ensure my team could handle anything.
The second struggle was the classic solopreneur trap: wearing too many hats and trying to control every single aspect of the company. In the beginning, I couldn’t afford to hire outside professionals for marketing, web design, or invoicing. I had to learn how to do everything myself the slow, hard way. I solved this by learning where to relinquish unnecessary control and where to invest my energy. This forced a lot of personal growth; I discovered where I needed improvement, what I was surprisingly good at, and exactly where the company needed to evolve.
Finally, handling our explosive growth created some serious scheduling puzzles early on. At the start, I was booking myself for full-time pet care jobs while simultaneously trying to manage the schedules of my entire team. If a team member had an emergency and couldn’t make a commitment, I was already too booked up to step in and fill the gap.
I resolved this by becoming far more selective when booking myself, ensuring I always have the administrative bandwidth to lead. More importantly, I learned that I can deeply lean on my amazing team—and they can lean on each other.
A perfect example of this happened early on with a client who needed overnight care for more than a week. I was already booked elsewhere, and a sudden scheduling conflict arose. In desperation, I reached out to my staff. Even though everyone was already busy or had existing plans, they came out of the woodwork to rescue us. Each person offered just one or two nights between their own schedules, and we pieced together the entire stay perfectly. One of the dogs was incredibly shy with strangers, so we kept an extra eye on him. Thanks to the team’s meticulous communication with each other and the client, the dog did better than anyone expected and made a ton of new friends!
Experiencing that moment completely validated the team I had built. It proved that even in the wake of a last-minute crisis, our internal communication and structure allowed us to operate flawlessly and perform efficiently without compromising on care. While I am still a work in progress and am constantly working to improve our systems, seeing my team pull together like that proved that Sara Lutz Pet Services is no longer just a solo venture—it is a resilient, deeply connected network that our community can always depend on.
We’ve been impressed with Sara Lutz Pet Services, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Sara Lutz Pet Services, we provide elite, fully bonded and insured pet care that bridges the gap between casual pet sitting and high-level medical and behavioral expertise. While we are based in Charlottesville, we have built a widespread team of experienced, reliable professionals strategically spread out across a massive service radius. This allows us to bring premium care to families well outside the city limits, including Keswick, Palmyra, Ruckersville, Stanardsville, Afton, Nellysford, Wintergreen Resort, Staunton, and Waynesboro, and everywhere in between.
What We Do & Our Services
We offer an expansive menu of tailored services designed to fit any pet’s lifestyle:
* In-Home Care: Dog walking, drop-in visits (ranging from 30 minutes to 4+ hours), and dedicated overnight care in the pet’s home.
* Adventure Hikes: Outings for high-energy dogs, including hikes and trips to local swimming holes.
* Pet Taxi Services: Reliable transportation for pickups, drop-offs, and appointment escorts.
* All-Species Care: We don’t just care for cats and dogs. Our team is experienced in handling birds, reptiles, small mammals (rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters), horses, and hobby farm animals like goats, pigs, and chickens.
Our Core Specializations
We are widely known for handling complex care situations that standard sitting services cannot:
* Special Needs & Medical Care: From administering complex medications and injections to daily specialized routines like expressing bladders for paralyzed pets, we handle advanced medical needs that standard sitters cannot.
* Behavioral Expertise: We understand shy, anxious, or reactive animals, ensuring they feel safe, respected, and comfortable in their own environments.
Brand Pride & Reliability
Brand-wise, I am most proud of the uncompromising infrastructure and the incredible team of independent contractors I have built. I didn’t want to just build a business that scaled; I wanted to build a business that scaled without losing its heart. Our team operates with meticulous communication and shared, elite standards. When clients hire us, they aren’t just getting an individual to feed their pet—they are gaining access to a highly organized, professional care network.
Because of this infrastructure, we offer bulletproof reliability. The single most common fear pet owners have when hiring a sitter is a last-minute cancellation. We have completely solved that problem. Because we are a large, highly coordinated team that works exceptionally well together, we have staff waiting in the wings to step in and fill a vacancy if an emergency ever arises. Furthermore, we prioritize building long-term relationships rooted in absolute trust. We require an initial Meet & Greet visit before any booking so that clients and their pets can meet their specific sitter face-to-face, ensuring a perfect, stress-free fit for everyone involved.
What I Want Readers to Know
I want Voyage readers to know that our clients truly become like family to us. We understand that leaving your home and your animals can be stressful. Whether you have a shy rescue dog who needs a patient handler, a senior cat requiring precise medical care, or a farm full of animals out in the county, Sara Lutz Pet Services provides the peace of mind that comes from knowing your loved ones are in the most qualified, dependable hands.
Any big plans?
Our blueprint for the future is focused on strategic, upward, and outward expansion. We want to scale our reach while continuously elevating the quality and availability of our care.
First and foremost, we plan to broaden our team and expand our service radius into new territories, making our reliable care accessible to even more families outside city limits. Along with geographic growth, a major priority is maximizing our availability so we can seamlessly accommodate our clients’ schedules whenever they need us most.
Internally, we are heavily investing in advanced professional development for our team. My goal is to implement specialized training and certifications across our entire network, including getting all of our caretakers Fear Free Certified and fully trained in Pet First Aid and CPR. Because of our high standards, ensuring the team possesses these elite, force-free skills is essential as we grow.
Finally, we are focused on deepening our community roots. We already proudly partner with various local veterinary offices, boarding kennels, doggy daycares, and fellow pet care companies in the area. Moving forward, we aim to strengthen these relationships and build new ones. We don’t view other pet professionals as competition; we see them as vital partners in building a safer, more connected, and exceptionally cared-for pet community throughout the region.
