Hidden Gems: Meet Sergio Atristain of Idea Translations

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sergio Atristain.

Hi Sergio, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We started as a boutique translation company — just three people — with a clear purpose: to serve the Spanish-speaking communities of Northern Virginia. Early on, we recognized two gaps in the market. First, there was a lack of professionalism and quality in how translation services were being delivered. Second, most providers in the space were limited to basic document translation — they simply weren’t equipped to handle video, web content, or more complex multilingual needs.

That’s where we saw our opportunity. My background is in business development, and my co-founder brings an industrial engineering perspective, so together we began building solutions that went well beyond traditional translation. We integrated machine translation, automation, and technology-driven workflows to manage the full scope of language services more efficiently and at a higher standard.

What started as a small, focused operation grew into something much more comprehensive — and that evolution has really defined who we are today.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been an exciting journey — dynamic, challenging, and deeply rewarding. From 2007 to 2015, we grew exponentially as demand for language services expanded rapidly. But we made a critical mistake: we had too many eggs in one basket. At our peak dependency, one client represented 65% of our revenue. Inevitably, a larger company acquired that firm, and almost overnight, that revenue disappeared — no transition plan, no warning, just silence. It was a hard lesson, but an invaluable one.
We regrouped, refocused, and by 2017 we were back on a strong growth trajectory — and far more resilient. Our largest client at that point represented only 7% of revenue. That diversification became the foundation of a much healthier business model.
Then came the pandemic. Unlike many brick-and-mortar businesses that struggled, we actually thrived. The explosion of remote work and remote learning opened significant opportunities for us in e-learning, transcription, and interpretation — and we were well-positioned to capture them.
Today, we’re navigating a new kind of disruption: artificial intelligence. Many organizations have fundamentally changed how they consume language services, and we’ve adapted accordingly. We developed our own AI-powered translation solution, while preserving the option for clients to have a professional linguist review, refine, and certify the output. We see AI not as a threat, but as an opportunity to deliver faster, smarter, and more scalable services — without sacrificing quality.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

What sets you apart from others?
Several things distinguish us in a crowded market. First, we are triple ISO-certified — holding ISO 9001:2015 for Quality Management, ISO 17100:2015 for Translation Services, and ISO/IEC 27001:2013 for Information Security — meaning our processes meet the most rigorous international standards for quality and data protection. Second, we built our own proprietary translation management platform called Iris, which gives clients real-time visibility, control, and communication throughout every project — something very few language service providers offer. Third, we hold a GSA Multiple Award Schedule contract, making us a trusted, pre-vetted partner for federal agencies. And fourth, we are a B-Certified, Minority-Owned, and Women-Owned business, reflecting our deep commitment to ethical, inclusive, and sustainable business practices.

What are you most proud of, brand-wise?
We are most proud of what our brand truly stands for: the intersection of technology, humanity, and purpose. We didn’t just build a translation company — we built a platform and a culture. Our Iris translation management system is something we created from scratch to solve a real problem our clients faced. Our B Corp certification reflects our belief that business can and should be a force for good. And our A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau speaks to the trust our clients place in us year after year. Clients like L’Oréal, Merck, Panera, The International Monetary Fund, The State of Virginia and The State of Maine choose us not just for our capabilities, but because they trust us.

What do you want readers to know about your brand, offerings, and services?
We want people to know that Idea Translations is not a commodity provider. We are a strategic language partner built for organizations that take communication seriously. In a world where AI is reshaping the language industry, we have embraced that change thoughtfully — developing our own AI-powered translation solution while always preserving the option for professional linguist review, refinement, and certification. We believe the future of language services is not AI or humans — it’s AI with humans, and we have built our model around that philosophy. If your organization needs to communicate clearly, compliantly, and authentically across languages and cultures, Idea Translations is ready to help.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Our most powerful growth engine has always been word of mouth. The majority of our new clients come to us through referrals — and that’s something we’re genuinely proud of, because it means the organizations we serve trust us enough to put their own reputation on the line by recommending us.
If your organization serves non-English-speaking communities, or if you’re looking to expand into new markets internationally, we’d love to start a conversation. We offer a no-obligation consultation where we take the time to understand your specific needs and provide an honest assessment of the strategies that make the most sense for you — so you can move forward with clarity and confidence.
