Hidden Gems: Meet Shane Pressley of Cedar Ridge Construction LLC.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shane Pressley.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Shane Pressley, and I’m a co-owner of Cedar Ridge Construction alongside my brother-in-law and business partner, Spencer. I’ve been married for over 12 years, and my wife and I have three children.

For the first nine years of my adult life, I worked in law enforcement. During that time, my father-in-law, Steve, who has worked in construction his entire life, would occasionally let me help him on my days off. Over the years, I grew to enjoy construction more and more. After my youngest child was born, I started to feel burned out in law enforcement, and I realized I wanted something different for my future and for my children’s future. I respected the profession and the lessons it taught me, but I knew I wanted to build something of my own that my family could one day be a part of.

I talked it over with my wife, then with Steve and Spencer. We spent a lot of time praying about it and discussing whether taking that leap of faith was the right move. Eventually, we decided to start our own construction company together.

At first, we struggled to come up with a name. One day, the name “Cedar Ridge Construction” popped into my head, and I started playing around with logos online. I found one I really liked and showed it to Spencer and Steve, and they both immediately agreed it felt right. From that point on, Cedar Ridge Construction became real.

I then went and took my Virginia Class A contractor license exam and passed it, followed by my Residential Building Construction specialty exam. Once we received our license and got all of our insurance and business setup completed, we officially got to work.

During our first year in business, we completed one new construction home, one full remodel, and several smaller jobs. After many long conversations and a lot more prayer, I officially left the sheriff’s office on December 31, 2024, and committed myself full-time to Cedar Ridge Construction.

In 2025, I decided to obtain our Commercial Building Construction specialty license. At the time, I didn’t necessarily intend to focus heavily on commercial work, but I didn’t want us to be limited or have to turn down opportunities if they came along. Not long after obtaining that license, our first commercial opportunity presented itself.

Throughout 2025, we completed three new construction homes, nine remodels, one complete fire-damage rebuild from the foundation up, and our first commercial project.

So far this year, we currently have four new construction homes under construction, five additional new construction homes under contract pending start, two commercial projects under construction — including a church addition and the Mellow Mushroom project in Danville — along with one completed commercial remodel and six completed residential remodels.

Above everything else, we are incredibly grateful that God has trusted us to steward this company. We truly believe His hand has guided us through every step of this journey and continues to open doors and provide opportunities for us to grow. We are a faith-driven Christian company, and we try to build our business as a ministry first and foremost. We want the way we treat our employees, customers, subcontractors, and community to reflect our values and our faith. None of this would have been possible without God’s guidance, favor, and provision, and we give Him all the glory for where we are today and where we are headed in the future.

What started as a conversation, a leap of faith, and a lot of prayer has turned into something we’re incredibly proud of. We’ve built this company through hard work, long hours, and a commitment to doing things the right way, and we’re excited about where it’s headed next.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest challenges we faced was stepping into the unknown. Leaving a stable career in law enforcement to start a construction company full-time was honestly one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made. I had a wife, three children, bills, and responsibilities, so there was definitely fear and uncertainty that came with taking that leap. There were a lot of long nights, difficult conversations, and moments where we questioned whether we were making the right decision.

Starting a business from the ground up also came with the normal growing pains — learning how to balance estimating, scheduling, managing employees and subcontractors, customer relationships, paperwork, finances, inspections, and everything else that comes with running a company. There were times we were stretched thin mentally, physically, and financially while trying to build the company the right way.

Another challenge was earning trust and building a reputation in the community. In construction, your name and reputation mean everything, and when you’re a new company, you have to prove yourself job after job. We understood early on that every customer interaction and every project mattered.

As the company began to grow faster, another challenge became learning how to manage growth responsibly. It’s easy to grow too fast and lose control of quality, communication, or company culture. We’ve worked hard to stay grounded, stay organized, and make sure we continue delivering quality work while still treating people the right way.

We have definitely had ups and downs. We’ve had good times and hard times. There have been moments where things came together smoothly, and there have also been moments filled with stress, uncertainty, and obstacles we didn’t expect. But through all of those hard times, God has guided us and led us to where we are now.

Through every challenge, our faith has been what kept us grounded. There were many moments where we had no choice but to pray, trust God, and keep moving forward even when we couldn’t fully see the outcome. Looking back now, some of the hardest moments were also the moments that built our character, strengthened our business, and taught us the most.
