Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Green.
Hi Stephanie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve worked in veterinary medicine for decades, and during that time I’ve seen firsthand how overwhelmed shelters can become, especially with cats. Shelter staff and volunteers work incredibly hard to find homes for them, but I wanted to do something to help.
It always broke my heart to see scared cats spending their days in cages. Cats are sensitive animals, and it’s hard for them to truly relax or let their personalities shine in that environment. I loved the idea of creating a cozy, home-like space where they could feel safe, play, interact with people, and simply be themselves while they waited for their forever families.
Knowing that The Toebean gives these cats a chance to be seen for who they really are—and helps them find loving homes—makes all the challenges of opening the café worthwhile. It allows me to make a meaningful difference in the lives of cats, one adoption at a time.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Opening The Toebean Cat Café has been anything but a smooth journey, but it’s been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I’ve learned more in a short amount of time than I ever imagined.
The biggest challenge was finding the right location. I had a very specific vision for the space, and most buildings just didn’t have the warm, welcoming atmosphere I was looking for. Even when I found a space that seemed promising, the conversation usually ended as soon as landlords heard the word “cats.” No matter how much I explained our business model or reassured them that their property would be meticulously maintained, the answer was almost always no.
Then I walked into 20 Walnut Avenue, and everything clicked. Suddenly, I understood why none of the other locations had worked out. This was exactly where The Toebean was meant to be. The building is charming, cozy, and full of character, with beautiful natural light pouring through the windows. It perfectly captures the atmosphere I had envisioned from the very beginning.
Of course, even the perfect location has come with its challenges. About halfway through my lease, my landlord informed me that utilities should never have been included in my rent and that I would need to begin paying them separately. It was an unexpected expense that I hadn’t budgeted for, and it certainly tested me as a small business owner. But that’s part of entrepreneurship—you adapt, problem-solve, and keep moving forward. Despite the obstacles, I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything, and I’m proud of what The Toebean has become.

The Toebean Cat Café is Roanoke’s premier cat café, combining a locally owned coffee shop with an adoptable cat lounge to create a space where people can relax while helping save lives. Every cat in our café is available for adoption through our rescue partners, giving them the opportunity to interact with visitors in a comfortable, home-like environment where their personalities can truly shine.
We’re known for more than just great coffee and adorable cats. We’ve worked hard to create a clean, welcoming, and relaxing atmosphere where everyone feels at home—from families and college students to remote workers and people simply looking for a peaceful break in their day. We also host unique community events like kitten yoga, sound bowl sessions, craft nights, and other experiences that bring people together while supporting animal rescue.
What sets us apart is that every visit has a purpose. Whether someone comes in for a latte, to spend time with the cats, or to attend an event, they’re directly supporting the care and adoption of homeless cats in our community. We’ve been honored to help so many cats find loving homes, and watching those success stories unfold is the most rewarding part of what we do.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that The Toebean Cat Café has become a place people associate with kindness, community, and second chances. I want our guests to know that every cup of coffee, every admission, and every purchase makes a real difference for local cats in need. My goal has always been to create a business that leaves our community a little better than I found it—one adoption, one connection, and one cup of coffee at a time.

Seeing a cat curled up, asleep in a soft, cozy bed in front of a window with not a care in the world.
Watching a shy cat come out of their shell over time.
Watching people interact with the cats and being able to see the stress leave their bodies.
Walking into a cat room to find a customer draped in kitties while taking a cat nap.
Reading a book in the loft with cats surrounding me while it’s raining outside!
Watching my team learn, grow, and excel in their roles, all to help the business and the kitties thrive.
