Today we’d like to introduce you to Theodore Walker.
Hi Theodore, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Music has always been a major part of my life. What began as a personal hobby—collecting music, learning how songs work together, and developing my skills as a DJ—gradually became something much more meaningful. I discovered that I enjoyed not only playing music, but also reading a crowd, creating the right atmosphere, and helping people celebrate important moments in their lives.
As I gained experience performing at private parties, community events, family celebrations, and other functions throughout Hampton Roads, I began taking the business side of DJing more seriously. I perform under the name DJ TR1, and in 2026 I officially established Signature Event Sound LLC to provide professional DJ and event-audio services for weddings, corporate functions, private celebrations, and community events.
My background as a United States Navy veteran helped shape the discipline, preparation, and attention to detail that I bring to every event. I believe a professional DJ’s responsibility goes far beyond playing music. It includes understanding the client’s vision, arriving prepared, using dependable equipment, communicating clearly, and knowing how to adjust when an event does not go exactly as planned.
Today, Signature Event Sound is a licensed and insured Virginia business and a SWaM-certified small business.
I have had the opportunity to work with families, couples, local businesses, and community organizations, including events connected with the City of Norfolk. I have also been added to a local venue’s preferred-vendor list.
I am still building and growing, but I am proud of how far this journey has come—from enjoying music as a personal passion to creating a business centered on service, professionalism, and memorable experiences. My goal is to continue expanding throughout Hampton Roads and ultimately make Signature Event Sound my full-time career.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been a smooth road. One of my biggest challenges has been building Signature Event Sound while continuing to work a full-time job as an aircraft logs and records technician. Growing a business requires time for much more than performing. I also have to manage consultations, contracts, invoices, marketing, music preparation, equipment maintenance, and follow-up with clients—often during evenings and weekends.
Another challenge was learning the business side of the DJ industry. Being a skilled DJ and operating a professional company are two different responsibilities. I had to educate myself about forming an LLC, licensing, zoning, insurance, taxes, contracts, vendor registration, pricing, and certification programs. Each step took research, patience, and persistence.
Establishing a reputation in a competitive market has also required consistent effort. New businesses do not begin with a full calendar or an established network of venues and planners. I have had to build trust one event and one relationship at a time. That has meant investing in professional equipment and presentation, asking satisfied clients for reviews, improving my website and marketing, and sometimes turning down opportunities that did not fairly value the service being provided.
The financial side has required discipline as well. Quality sound equipment, lighting, insurance, software, advertising, and transportation are significant investments. I have had to grow carefully and make decisions based on the long-term direction of the company.
Those challenges have made me more prepared, patient, and intentional. Every obstacle has taught me something that has helped Signature Event Sound become stronger and more professional.
We’ve been impressed with Signature Event Sound LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Signature Event Sound LLC is a veteran-owned, SWaM-certified small business providing professional DJ, event-audio, and entertainment services throughout Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and the greater Hampton Roads area. I perform under the name DJ TR1 and specialize in weddings, corporate functions, private celebrations, family reunions, and community events.
My approach begins with understanding the client’s vision. Every event has a different audience, purpose, and desired atmosphere, so I do not rely on one standard playlist or a one-size-fits-all presentation. I work with clients before the event to understand their musical preferences, important moments, special requests, and any songs or content they want avoided. During the event, I read the room and adjust the music and energy as needed.
Signature Event Sound provides much more than music. Depending on the event, services can include professional sound reinforcement, wireless microphones, announcements and emcee support, dance-floor lighting, uplighting, and ceremony audio. I use dependable professional equipment and maintain backup options because preparation and reliability are essential when someone has trusted me with an important occasion.
What sets the company apart is the combination of personalized service, professionalism, versatility, and attention to detail. My Navy background strongly influences how I prepare and conduct business. I value punctuality, clear communication, proper planning, and following through on commitments.
I am especially proud that Signature Event Sound has grown beyond individual bookings into relationships with venues, local organizations, and municipal departments. The company is licensed and insured, registered as a Virginia vendor, and has been added to a local venue’s preferred-vendor list.
I want readers to know that Signature Event Sound is built around service. Whether the event is an intimate wedding, a family celebration, or a large community gathering, my goal is to create a polished, enjoyable experience that allows the client and their guests to remain present and enjoy the occasion.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice is to take both the craft and the business seriously from the beginning. Learn how to mix, organize music, read different types of crowds, and recover when something does not go as planned. Owning professional equipment does not automatically make someone prepared to manage an event. Technical ability, judgment, communication, and reliability matter just as much.
I would also encourage anyone starting out to learn the business side earlier than I did. Use written contracts, collect deposits, carry insurance, track income and expenses, and clearly define what is included in your services. Research your market before setting prices. Charging too little may attract opportunities, but it can also make it difficult to cover your costs, maintain your equipment, and build a sustainable company.
Do not feel pressured to purchase every new piece of equipment. Start with dependable essentials, learn them thoroughly, and add equipment when your bookings and services justify the investment. Always have backup plans for the things that could interrupt an event.
Relationships are also extremely important. Treat clients, venue staff, other vendors, and fellow DJs with respect. Ask questions, accept constructive feedback, and find experienced people willing to offer guidance. A good reputation is built through consistency, and one strong relationship can lead to opportunities that advertising alone may never create.
Most importantly, be patient with your progress. Growth rarely happens as quickly as we want it to. Focus on becoming better after every event, reinvest wisely, and do not measure your journey against someone else’s highlight reel.
