Inspiring Conversations with Allison Ritter of The Tea Cart

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Ritter.

Hi Allison, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Established in 2014, The Tea Cart is a traditional British tearoom serving fine English fare and curated loose teas. The Tea Cart opened its doors to offer a tranquil, one-of-a-kind experience for those looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Our tearoom host a variety of events from monthly specialty teas to bridal showers, birthday parties, baby showers and more. It is the perfect destination for private parties, traditional afternoon tea, or to enjoy a quiet corner and a spot of tea.

Located in the heart of Berryville, Virginia we are proud to join the likes of many of Virginia’s finest retailers and businesses on Main Street.

What We Do

We serve the finest traditional British fare paired with curated specialty teas that are truly one of a kind. Although we regularly serve our house signatures, we often provide homemade seasonal additions to the menu. Our tea selection includes a variety of flavors and blends, specifically chosen to compliment each service. Its aromatic infusion stimulates the palate and is quite more than just an accompanied drink.

Your visit to The Tea Cart is a memorable and nostalgic experience. Our English garden setting enclosed with beautifully painted murals, feminine floral accents, and lush Victorian seating makes the ceremony of English Afternoon Tea fit for The Queen.

The English ritual of Afternoon Tea can now be enjoyed all over the world, incorporating teas grown and harvested from China, India, even Egypt to name a few. While we do offer a large assortment of teas, preserving British tradition is at the top of our list, so PG Tips is available upon request. We have picked the variety, given it proper preparation, and present it table side right off The Tea Cart.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Overall, it has been a smooth road. We originally opened as a small shop, but when we were impacted by Covid our guest attendance went down, we decided to pivot into catering. This was a blessing in disguise because it now accounts for at least a quarter of our business. Once our attendance came back, we started raising revenue and added themed teas, which is also a huge asset to the company.
A constant struggle, however is staffing challenges. It is difficult to find qualified staff while still fitting into our budget restraints as a small business. Another challenge that is unique to our business is that we make everything from scratch and in-house. This not only requires a skilled kitchen staff but also makes our payroll on the higher end in comparison to similar businesses. This is where catering and themed teas with higher price points balance it out.
For me, the biggest challenge is balancing my time at work and time at home with my family. I have three small boys, so quality time with them and my husband is very important. I want to make sure I’m providing memorable experiences and on-site to deliver this, but also implementing systems and training so that my team can execute in my absence.

We’ve been impressed with The Tea Cart, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Tea Cart is more than a tearoom – we are a place where tradition, hospitality, and color come together.
Rooted in the charm of British afternoon tea, we’ve created an experience that feels special without feeling stuffy. From beautifully prepared homemade sweets, savories, and scones to thoughtfully selected loose-leaf teas, crafted mimosas and immersive themed events, every detail is designed to give our guests a reason to slow down, gather and celebrate.
Beyond our tearoom, The Tea Cart also brings our signature hospitality to you through catering. From intimate gatherings and showers to weddings, corporate events, celebrations, and traditional afternoon teas, our catering services allow guests to enjoy The Tea Cart experience beyond our doors.
At our heart, The Tea Cart is about creating experiences and memories. Whether it’s a quiet afternoon with a friend, a mother-daughter tradition, a birthday celebration or one of our signature themed teas, we want every visit to feel like an occasion.
We honor the traditions of afternoon tea while giving them our own personality – creative, a little unexpected, and distinctly The Tea Cart.

One of the things I am most proud of is our consistency and our commitment to making our food from scratch. From the beginning, we made the decision that the quality of what we serve would never be something we compromised on. Over a decade later, we’re still preparing every dish in our kitchen with the same care and attention to detail. We will soon be introducing some products to market and currently offer grab & go options, custom orders and produce a new menu about every month. For me, growth has never meant sacrificing what made us special in the first place. No matter how The Tea Cart evolves, homemade food, creativity, quality and consistency will remain at the heart of what we do.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I would say resilience has been the most important quality to my success. Owning a business, especially in the hospitality industry, means constantly navigating challenges, adjusting and learning as you go.
