Hi Carra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Ahhh the story of how I went from bullied to boss; I still can’t wrap my mind around it. I was a young girl who felt isolated, so I got in my creative bag. That’s where it all started for me.
Somewhere along the line I became obsessed with taking pictures. I would do photoshoots in the neighborhood with friends, capture images of everything in my room; I just wanted a camera in my hand. This desire would later evolve into taking on photography and marketing roles where it was no longer just me seeing that I was good at what I do, but others as well. What was once my coping mechanism became the very thing God would use to platform me in the future.
In 2019, I took the leap and started my own business which is now called, UnMute Media. Through the hills and valleys and all its iterations, UnMute is the ultimate redemption story for me. From the girl who used to stay to her self, hide behind the camera, and stay in the background. Now she is taking back her life, her voice, and helping others UnMute.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Are you even doing it right if there aren’t challenges along the way? But here are some ways that I didn’t know they would come.
Knowing what money is worth it.
There will be opportunities to work with people and projects, but should you just for the money? When you are your own boss, there is no one coming to tell you that you shouldn’t other than your inner intuition and convictions. It’s very important that you listen to that.
Evaluate as you go, or the economy will force you to.
I was told when starting business that most don’t last a year, let alone past three. But I realized, most of that comes from thinking you have to stay doing things one way when you can pivot whenever you need to.
And the last thing is, I went into business a people pleaser and not a business owner.
Become the next version of you so you can get to where you really want to.
