Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Kim.
Hi Dan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My Parents started by buying a Korean Grocery Store, HANA ORIENTAL MARKET, in 1998, The grocery store was a social hub for the Korean community since the 80’s renting K-Dramas on VHS tapes, selling Korean Goods, and making homemade Korean Food Staples. My mom and dad made everything in house, the bulgogis, kimchis, and banchan (side dishes) everyday.
Around 2008 the building caught on fire, but our church community helped rebuild and open the grocery store. At the Same time is was a blessing in disguise because they were able to buy the building for a great deal.
2011 we opened our first casual dining restaurant called HANARO RESTAURANT
2015 streaming services on the internet was on the rise and the grocery store was becoming less and less of a social hub, and with the success of HANARO RESTAURANT my parents decided to open the first Korean BBQ Restaurant in the Hampton Roads
2016 we opened our doors for the first time as 757 KOREAN BBQ
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The Fire was a big hit to moral and finances especially being around the 2008 financial crisis. But our Church community helped us rebuild and reopen
We’ve been impressed with 757 Korean BBQ, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
757 Korean BBQ is our Family Restaurant. I would say we’re famous for our homemade Banchan (Side Dishes) and our hand butchered marinated meats. Everything we serve is made in house, we butcher the meat, our bulgogi is tender and delicious. our galbi is unreal, we only use prime Angus Short Rib.
We’re proud of our story and the food that we serve, we are constantly looking to grow and provide the most authentic Korean Food as we’ve know from my families recipes of over 40 years.
Our Brand is Simple, 757 being our area code and Korean BBQ. we Serve Authentic Korean Food here and we strive to be the best that we can
How do you think about luck?
No Luck, work hard and do the best that you can. My dad has always said that.
