Today we’d like to introduce you to Gerson Polanco.
Hi Gerson, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
We actually started out working for a family member’s company, but over time, we realized we needed to strike out on our own. The whole idea was born from a drive to build a better financial future for ourselves and support our family. As we gained experience, we realized we had the skill, the drive, and the potential to build something of our own, and that’s how Polanco Projects was born.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not always, of course! When we first started, there was so much about running a business that we simply didn’t know yet, so we’ve had to learn a lot as we go. We’ve been fortunate not to face any massive disasters, but we deal with everyday challenges, whether that’s managing crews, navigating customer expectations, or balancing job sites. Like any business, it has its ups and downs, but our main goal is always to make sure everyone, especially our clients and our team, feels respected and taken care of.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Originally, the company was built around painting and carpentry to serve clients throughout Charlottesville and the surrounding areas. My brother is a skilled carpenter and I manage the painting side, so combining those specialties allowed us to offer our community a much more complete package right off the bat. Over time, we’ve built out a trusted team of trade partners for things like electrical and plumbing, meaning we can now manage a full construction project from start to finish.
Recently, we’ve also expanded into the Fix & Flip market because we saw huge potential there, and having our own in-house crews allows us to execute projects efficiently and at a high standard. Eventually, our goal is to transition fully into real estate investing and step back from day-to-day operations. As we grow into that space, we want to empower our team by handing over more ownership of the work. For example, giving our lead painting crew the budget and responsibility to run the entire painting scope of a flip project. That way, we can focus on growing the investment side while giving our crew room to step up, lead, and share in the success.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite memory is from my birthdays growing up. Every year on my birthday, my mom would make my absolute favorite meal: baked chicken with rice and potato salad.
