Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Jones.
Hi Kimberly, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In October of 2021, I unexpectedly became a single parent to my (then) 5 year old son. I had recently graduated with a Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling 1 year prior, and was beginning the process of residency to obtain my license as a Licensed Professional Counselor. It was very challenging to navigate the extensive requirements for this, which includes 3,400 hours of supervised post-graduate experience and also to pass the required board examination, all while adjusting to being a single parent. With support and determination, I was able to complete the requirements and obtained my LPC license in July of 2024.
My daughter was then born in August 2025, and we both had some health complications after the birth. I ended up needing to have emergency back surgery and I honestly wasn’t sure at the time if I’d be able to return to full time work. It had always been a dream of mine to start my own private practice, and something about that experience really fueled me to go for it. It took some months to get everything in order, but by the end of 2025 I was able to start offering virtual sessions and then opened up my in-person office in February 2026.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting my private practice has felt like the culmination of everything coming to fruition over years and years of perseverance and hard work. The road to getting here was full of challenges and obstacles, both personally and professionally. Taking that step out on your own can feel very scary because you have no guarantee that it’s going to work. I am still very much in the process of building my business and my brand, but I truly feel that I am in alignment with what is right for myself and my business.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about K Jones Counseling?
I’m Kim Jones, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Virginia and the founder of K Jones Counseling.
I offer virtual and in-person therapy in Virginia.
I was drawn to this work through a deep sense of calling and lived experience. I believe healing happens in relationships where you feel safe enough to be fully yourself. My goal is to create a therapeutic space where clients feel understood, respected, and supported as they reconnect with who they are beneath survival patterns.
Many people I work with are thoughtful, capable, and deeply caring, yet feel worn down by patterns of being misunderstood, taken advantage of, or disconnected from their own needs. I help individuals who are healing from trauma learn how to set boundaries, build confidence, and trust themselves more fully. My work focuses on understanding patterns, building emotional awareness, developing skills for boundaries and regulation, and strengthening self-trust.
What does success mean to you?
For me, success looks like living in alignment with my core values as my authentic self. There were many years in my life where I lived my life based on what I thought others wanted from me, and it left me feeling empty, lonely, and without a clear sense of self or identity. I had to work really hard to heal my past traumas and to improve my self-worth. Now, no matter what happens with my business or life in the future, I feel successful knowing that I can stand proudly as a person who can overcome challenges with integrity and authenticity.
