Inspiring Conversations with Lee Matthis of Intrinsic Wellness Collective

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lee Matthis.

Hi Lee, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I participated in my preceptorship from grad school in Palmyra, VA, right outside of Charlottesville in 2006. Our family had planned on being located in central VA, but an opportunity opened up in Southwest VA that I took and we spent 19 years growing a practice, running a company, and raising our three children through high school.
A great friend from grad school, Dr Tickel, had been practicing in Charlottesville for about 10 years when his family had the opportunity to relocate to Atlanta. Having been working together in a consulting role for practice systems, we discussed selling his practice to a local chiropractor. After a few months, he decided that he wouldn’t be able to set his patients up with the continuity of care they had come to expect, so he suggested I buy his practice.
I spoke with several mentors and dear friends and they assured me this was the career move to make. Our sons were out on their own and our daughter would be starting at American University in the fall, so the move to Charlottesville put is right in between them and afforded me the opportunity to own my own clinic. We made the leap and started Intrinsic Wellness Collective, moved to Charlottesville, and have been supremely happy with our new surroundings.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Things have panned out ridiculously well. My ability to transition patients to a young chiropractor, from whose father I took over my practice was a really awesome full-circle moment. The transition into Cville, with Dr Tickel introducing me and vouching for me as a great chiropractor and “solid dude” gave immediate credence to my new practice.
We were able to keep our primary residence for our sons to rent, while we used Furnished Finders for local housing. This allowed us to wait on selling our home and having to deal with all the stresses of transitioning our household immediately
There have been struggles as well. Saying good bye to an area we’ve lived almost half our lives, the place where we raised our kids, the community we so loved, one of the greatest companies in the chiropractic profession, and the patients I had taken care of through the ups and downs of their lives was a very hard to do.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Intrinsic Wellness Collective?
Intrinsic Wellness Collective was born out of a desire to help as many people as possible. We are a group of 5 holistic healthcare practitioners who focus on the needs of the person in front of us. We don’t rely on a large, broken healthcare system to dictate care to our patients/clients.
We collaborate as a group to ensure our clientele are seeing the most appropriate provider for their needs and wants offering chiropractic care, Shockwave therapy, decompression therapy, massage therapy, and acupuncture to ensure they are able to live their best self.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I grew up in eastern NC, spending the majority of my time outside in the woods or on a ball field. I was very rambunctious and spent a good deal of time toeing the line of what I should and should not be doing. Humor was and is a large part of my personality, so when my paternal grandmother passed away during an operation, I decided that the ‘dark side’ of healthcare wasn’t for me. I opted to attend chiropractic school instead of medical school to be able to laugh and uplift my patients daily.
