Today we’d like to introduce you to Martia Clark.
Martia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my journey as a daycare provider, where I spent years caring for children and supporting families. During that time, I saw a need for a safe, fun, and confidence-building space where children could feel special and celebrated. That inspired me to open Unique & Special Kids Spa — a place created just for kids to enjoy self-care, creativity, and memorable experiences.
As I continued serving families, I realized adults needed that same kind of care too. Many moms, caregivers, and busy professionals were pouring into everyone else but needed a space to pause, reset, and feel restored. That led me to open Silk Rose Spa, a wellness spa in Alexandria focused on massage, skincare, acupuncture, head spa treatments, and holistic self-care. My story has always been about seeing a need, filling that need, and creating spaces where people of all ages feel valued, cared for, and renewed.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges came when we moved locations and then the pandemic hit shortly after. As an in-person spa business, that was incredibly difficult. We had to pivot quickly and find new ways to support our community, even when we couldn’t physically serve them in the same way. We focused more on wellness education, virtual information, and staying connected with the families and clients who trusted us.
Silk Rose Spa also began as a partnership that ultimately did not work out, which meant I had to rebuild, learn, and grow in ways I did not expect. I self-taught, sought outside education, and worked hard to become stronger as a wellness practitioner and business owner. Balancing two businesses, a family, and volunteer work in my community is a lot, but it is also where I get much of my motivation and energy. The challenges have shaped me, but they have also reminded me why this work matters.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Silk Rose Spa is a wellness spa in Alexandria, Virginia, created to be more than just a place to receive a service. We are a space where people can pause, reflect, and reconnect with themselves. We specialize in massage, customized facials, head and scalp spa treatments, acupuncture, foot soaks, infrared sauna, couples experiences, group spa days, and holistic self-care services that support the whole person — body, mind, and nervous system.
What sets Silk Rose Spa apart is the way we blend luxury, wellness, and genuine care. We do not believe self-care should feel rushed or generic. Every guest is treated as an individual, and our goal is to create an experience that feels calming, intentional, and restorative from the moment they walk in. We are especially proud to serve women, couples, busy professionals, caregivers, and people who are carrying stress and simply need a safe place to exhale.
Brand-wise, I am most proud that Silk Rose Spa has become known as a place of restoration and connection. Our brand is rooted in the idea that wellness is not selfish — it is necessary. Whether someone comes in for a massage, facial, acupuncture session, head spa, or a special spa day with someone they love, we want them to leave feeling seen, cared for, and renewed. That is the heart of Silk Rose Spa.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
As an ambivert, I truly love people, but my comfort zone is often being in my own space with my family. Networking has not always been the easiest thing for me, but I have learned that growth often requires stepping outside of what feels familiar. Every time I have pushed myself to attend an event, start a conversation, or connect with another business owner, I have walked away with something valuable — whether it was encouragement, wisdom, a new idea, or a meaningful relationship.
My advice is to be open, but also be intentional. You do not have to connect with everyone, but you do need to be willing to put yourself in rooms where you can learn and be inspired. A good mentor does not always have to be someone with a formal title. Sometimes it is another entrepreneur, a client, a community leader, or someone whose life and work you respect. What has worked well for me is staying genuine, asking questions, listening, and being willing to learn from people in different spaces. The right connections can remind you that you are not building alone.
