Inspiring Conversations with Sarhand Sarnosi (Hasan) of Sarnosi Psychological Services PLLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarhand Sarnosi (Hasan).

Hi Sarhand, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a small village in Kurdistan and moved to the United States in early 2013 to pursue my education. When I first arrived, I began by taking English language courses. Over the years, through hard work, determination, and perseverance, I earned two master’s degrees and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. After completing my doctoral training and becoming a licensed clinical psychologist, I took another significant step in my professional journey by establishing my own private practice, Sarnosi Psychological Services. Looking back, my journey from a small village in Kurdistan to becoming a psychologist and business owner in the United States has been one of personal growth, resilience, and the pursuit of opportunities that once seemed far beyond my reach.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey has not been a smooth road by any means. When I first moved to the United States, I faced numerous challenges, beginning with navigating a new country without knowing the language or being familiar with the culture. Building friendships, establishing social connections, and adapting to an entirely different way of life were difficult, especially while trying to support myself financially and pursue my education.

One of the greatest challenges was balancing the demands of school with the need to earn a living. As an immigrant, I was not eligible for student loans, so I had to work to cover my living and educational expenses while maintaining strong academic performance to qualify for scholarships. There were periods when I worked for months without taking a single day off, sometimes even working 24-hour shifts, just to make ends meet and continue my education.

It was physically, emotionally, and financially exhausting at times, but I knew why I had come to this country and what I wanted to accomplish. Giving up was not something I wanted to consider. Every challenge required sacrifices, discipline, and perseverance. Looking back, those experiences shaped not only my professional journey but also who I am as a person. They taught me resilience, the value of hard work, and the importance of making the most of the opportunities available to me.

As you know, we’re big fans of Sarnosi Psychological Services PLLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am the founder of Sarnosi Psychological Services, PLLC (SPS), a private practice dedicated to providing high-quality, evidence-based, and personalized mental health care. My practice provides individual therapy, couples therapy, group therapy, and comprehensive psychological assessments, including evaluations for ADHD and autism spectrum disorder in adults. Services are available in person in Arlington, Virginia, and through telehealth in Virginia and other states participating in PSYPACT.

My practice specializes in helping individuals navigate mental health challenges, relationship difficulties, life transitions, and personal growth. I incorporate evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and the Gottman Method, while recognizing that every individual has unique experiences, strengths, and goals.

What sets my practice apart is my commitment to individualized care, cultural sensitivity, and the belief that psychological services should be tailored to each person’s needs rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach. I strive to create an environment where clients feel heard, understood, and respected, regardless of their background or circumstances. I also recognize that financial barriers can prevent people from accessing mental health services, which is why I offer sliding-scale fees for individuals experiencing financial hardship.

My personal journey has significantly shaped the philosophy behind my practice. Having grown up in a small village in Kurdistan and experienced the challenges of immigration, cultural adjustment, financial hardship, and pursuing higher education in a new country, I have developed a deep appreciation for human resilience, cultural diversity, and the importance of understanding people within the context of their lived experiences.

What I am most proud of is establishing a practice that reflects both my professional expertise and personal values. I wanted to build something that goes beyond providing psychological services—a place where people can feel comfortable being themselves, gain a deeper understanding of their experiences, recognize their strengths, and work toward meaningful changes in their lives.

Ultimately, I want readers to know that mental health care is not only about treating psychological difficulties or identifying diagnoses. It is also about helping people better understand themselves, strengthen their relationships, develop resilience, and improve their overall quality of life. This philosophy is at the heart of Sarnosi Psychological Services.
