Inspiring Conversations with Shara Posner DC of Back to Heath Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shara Posner DC.

Hi Shara, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey into healthcare started with a passion for movement, nutrition, and helping people live healthier lives. After earning my Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from the University of Maryland, I went on to receive both my Doctor of Chiropractic degree and Master’s degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport.

In 2004, I opened Back to Health Center in Old Town Alexandria with the vision of creating a practice that looked beyond simply treating pain. I wanted to build a place where patients could access comprehensive, evidence informed care that focused on improving how they move, function, and feel every day.

Over the past two decades, that vision has continued to evolve. Today, Back to Health Center offers chiropractic care alongside services such as acupuncture, massage therapy, rehabilitation, IV therapy, regenerative medicine, and wellness programs. My clinical focus has expanded to include prenatal and pediatric care, women’s health, functional wellness, and performance optimization.

Beyond the practice, I enjoy mentoring other healthcare professionals, contributing health articles to the Alexandria Stylebook, speaking within the community, and serving on the boards of organizations that support education and children’s health. Looking back, I’m incredibly grateful that what started as a dream to help people has grown into a multidisciplinary wellness center that has served the Alexandria community for more than 20 years.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. Like most business owners, I’ve had plenty of moments where I questioned whether I was doing the right thing. Starting a practice from scratch is exciting, but it’s also humbling. In the beginning, every patient mattered, every referral mattered, and every decision carried a lot of weight.

Over the years I’ve navigated economic downturns, changing healthcare regulations, staffing challenges, and of course the COVID pandemic, which forced us to completely rethink how we cared for patients. Those experiences taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of surrounding myself with an incredible team.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that growth isn’t just about adding new services. It’s about continually listening to your patients and evolving to meet their needs. That’s why Back to Health Center has grown from a chiropractic office into a comprehensive wellness center offering multiple specialties under one roof.

Looking back, I wouldn’t change the difficult seasons because they shaped both me as a leader and the practice we’ve built. Every challenge reinforced why I started this journey in the first place: to help people live healthier, more active lives.

As you know, we’re big fans of Back to Heath Center. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Back to Health Center was built on a simple philosophy: healthcare should be personalized, comprehensive, and focused on helping people live their best lives, not just manage symptoms. While chiropractic care remains the foundation of our practice, we’ve grown into a multidisciplinary wellness center where patients can access a wide range of services under one roof, including acupuncture, massage therapy, spinal decompression, rehabilitation, IV nutrient therapy, regenerative medicine, thermography, medical weight loss, peptide therapy, and aesthetic wellness services.

We care for everyone from newborns to seniors, but we’ve become especially known for prenatal and pediatric chiropractic care, women’s health, and helping active adults stay healthy and mobile. Whether someone comes to us with back pain, migraines, pregnancy discomfort, a sports injury, or simply wants to optimize their health, our goal is always to identify the root cause and create a personalized plan that helps them thrive.

What truly sets us apart is our collaborative approach. Our providers work together rather than in silos, allowing us to create customized care plans that combine the right therapies for each individual. We take the time to educate our patients so they understand not only what we’re doing, but why we’re doing it.

More than anything, I’m proud of the culture we’ve created. Back to Health Center has become a place where patients feel genuinely cared for. Many families have trusted us with multiple generations of care, from pregnancy through childhood and into adulthood. That trust is something we never take for granted, and it’s the greatest compliment our community can give us.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
People are often surprised to learn that I’m actually a bit of a science nerd. I genuinely love reading the latest research, attending continuing education courses, and learning about emerging therapies. Whether it’s nutrition, movement science, regenerative medicine, peptides, or longevity, I’m constantly studying because healthcare is always evolving, and I believe my patients deserve a doctor who evolves with it.

On the other hand, many people assume I’m “always on” because I own a busy practice, but outside the office my favorite role is simply being a wife and mom. Some of my happiest moments are spent traveling with my family, cheering on my kids at their activities, or tackling a home design project. I love creating beautiful, welcoming spaces, whether that’s in my home or in the office, because I believe your environment can have a real impact on how you feel.

I also think people are surprised to learn that after more than 20 years in practice, I still get genuinely excited when a patient reaches a milestone they didn’t think was possible. Whether it’s a new mom finally sleeping without pain, an athlete getting back to their sport, or someone avoiding surgery through conservative care, those moments never get old. They’re the reason I still love coming to work every day.
