Inspiring Conversations with Tevin Majors of Majors Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tevin Majors.

Hi Tevin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My story begins by being raised by two amazing army veterans in Clarksville Tennessee. My mother was an auditor for the federal government and may have given me the bug of liking accounting to this day. While my father taught me the dynamics of morals, ethics, and hard work that has shaped my career today.

I was introduced to the industry through my mother from her job, as well as through my high school Clarksville high through an intro to accounting class to gain a college credit. From day one, I was hooked. Not because of how easy the topic came to me but because of how it helped me understand how to run the financial side of a business and I always have wanted to become a business owner myself since a kid.

After that course my junior year of high school, I knew that one day I would want to help people understand their businesses through their finances, as well as understand my own one day.

Once I graduated from high school I enrolled into Tennessee state university in Nashville to get my bachelor’s in business with a focus in accounting. That’s where it officially got the ball rolling. After grueling accounting classes and making long lasting connections, I was able to see the value of my degree working before even getting it.

I was able to help some of my college friends and colleagues in understanding their taxes, helping start their businesses, and even helping with budgeting their money for the first time.

It was exhilarating and enjoyable and is the reason I am doing what I do today. I was able to get practice with some friends in what I wanted to do with taxes, and accounting work, while working on my degree.

My junior year I was able to get my first internship from Hoskins & Company CPA’s. Thanks to my brother Michael, who was an auditor for the company at the time (you can say accounting runs in our blood) and Harvey Hoskins, the first African American CEO of an accounting firm I have ever met.

To this day, that has been one of the best work experiences I have ever had in my life as I was able to learn, and understand how the field truly works, as well as be a valued employee of the business, even as an intern.

To this day, I believe that experience is the reason I am the CEO of my own accounting and tax practice now.

With that experience, I believe it set me on the path that I am on today. Upon getting my degree in accounting in 2017, I stepped into the workforce.

Not in accounting though, things took a turn as it was rough finding a job in accounting, so I went on the path of working at enterprise rent a car as a management trainee and the being promoted to management assistant all within a year.

Although I was set financially, my urge to be an accountant was not fulfilled. Therefore, I decided to reach back out to Hoskins & company to get a staff accountant position.

I interviewed, got the position and even took a pay cut because I knew that this was the path I wanted in life. I worked for Hoskins’s for a year and an half and got great experience, but ended up leaving to move to Cleveland, OH for a different opportunity.

While getting my master’s in business Admin at Trevecca Nazarene University. Here is where the story of Majors Consulting begins. Once I moved to Ohio in 2019, I worked for a small firm in independence Ohio and gained great experience for all of 6 months, and then the pandemic hit!

In March 2020 I was laid off with no understanding of what life was going to be like. With uncertainty of the global pandemic happening I still had to pay bills and find a way. So, after 3 months of living off of unemployment and applying for hundreds of jobs a week, I decided to go for what I knew and decided to reach out to some friends and offer bookkeeping and tax services for their small businesses.

Some declined because of uncertainty from the pandemic, but a couple gave me a chance to do bookkeeping for them. That became the spark of Majors Consulting!

I was still not able to pay the bills with the low work that I received from these monthly services, so I still had to go back to work and landed a job at Marcum LLP, a large accounting firm.

All while still doing Majors Consulting on the side. I stayed at Marcum doing accounting and bookkeeping services for 2 years while building a book of business for myself.

After that experience I tried again to be a full-time entrepreneur and left Marcum, and another firm I ended up working for in Columbus, Ohio in May of 2023.

From that day I have been a full-time entrepreneur and CEO of Majors Consulting with a staff of 3, A small but mighty team that has been geared dedicated to assisting everyone that comes to us with their accounting and tax services needs to the highest standard possible.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This has not been a smooth road to see say the least. Although I have so much experience, it has been countless days/nights that I stayed up wondering if this business will even work. Will I ever be able to find the success that I have desired since a child. My biggest hurdles along the way have been being let go from 2 jobs in the field that I love, as well as the patience it takes to land a good client in the field.

The biggest hurdles for me has been patience and the curve of seasons in the business. In the early years of the business, I struggled with being super busy during tax season but having minimal work after tax season.

Of course, during those times, like any entrepreneur you have self-doubt, lack of confidence, and no patience. Though this is true, I still fought for what I believed in and trusted in the process and never gave up and now stayed consistent to the point I am at now.
