Life & Work with David Lee of Virginia

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Lee.

Hi David, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Education has always been important to me, and I wanted to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children. After serving in the healthcare sector, I was looking for a career where I could give back to my community while helping students build confidence and develop lifelong learning skills. That’s when I discovered the Kumon Method.

As a Kumon parent myself, I was drawn to Kumon’s individualized approach because it allows each student to learn at their own pace, strengthening both math and reading fundamentals. I knew this was an opportunity to help students not only improve academically but also become more independent, disciplined, and confident learners.

Opening my Kumon Center has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Every day, I have the privilege of watching students overcome challenges, celebrate milestones, and achieve goals they once thought were out of reach. Seeing their confidence grow is one of the most fulfilling parts of my work.

My goal is to create a welcoming, encouraging environment where every student can reach their full potential. I believe that with consistent practice, patience, and the right guidance, every child is capable of achieving success.

Being a Kumon Instructor is more than a profession; it’s an opportunity to make a lasting impact on students, families, and the community.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the challenges of being a Kumon Instructor is recognizing that every student learns differently. Some students grasp new concepts quickly, while others need more time, encouragement, and individualized support. Finding the right balance between challenging students and keeping them motivated requires patience and consistency.

Another challenge is partnering with families. Parents naturally want to see quick results, but Kumon is built on steady, long-term progress. Helping families understand the importance of daily practice and consistent attendance is essential to a student’s success.

Running a center also means balancing the educational side with the responsibilities of operating a small business. Managing staff, maintaining a high-quality learning environment, and ensuring every student receives personalized attention can be demanding, but it is also incredibly rewarding.

Despite these challenges, watching students gain confidence, become independent learners, and achieve goals they once thought were impossible makes every obstacle worthwhile. Their growth and success continue to inspire me every day.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a Kumon Instructor, I help students build strong foundations in math and reading while developing the confidence, discipline, and independent learning skills they need to succeed both in school and in life. I work with students of all ages and abilities, creating individualized learning plans that allow each child to progress at a pace that’s right for them.

I specialize in identifying each student’s strengths and areas for growth, then guiding them through consistent practice and encouragement to reach their full potential. My goal isn’t just to help students improve their grades; it’s to help them become self motivated learners who enjoy overcoming challenges.

What I’m most proud of is seeing students achieve milestones they once thought were impossible. Whether it’s a struggling reader gaining confidence, a student mastering advanced math, or a child developing the independence to complete work on their own, those moments are incredibly rewarding. I also take great pride in the strong relationships I’ve built with families who trust me to be part of their children’s educational journey.

What sets me apart is my commitment to treating every student as an individual. I believe that every child can succeed when given the right guidance, encouragement, and opportunities to grow. I strive to create a supportive and welcoming learning environment where students feel challenged, encouraged, and celebrated for their progress. My focus is not only on academic achievement but also on developing lifelong learning habits that prepare students for future success.

How do you define success?
I define success by the positive impact I have on others. As a Kumon Instructor, success isn’t measured only by higher test scores or academic achievements; it’s seeing students develop confidence, become independent learners, and discover that they are capable of accomplishing more than they ever imagined.

Success also means building strong relationships with families and earning their trust. When parents tell me their child enjoys learning, takes initiative, or has gained confidence both inside and outside the classroom, I know we’re making a meaningful difference.

On a personal level, success is about continuous growth. I strive to keep learning, improve as an educator and business owner, and create an environment where every student feels supported, challenged, and inspired to reach their full potential. Knowing that I’ve helped shape a student’s future is the greatest measure of success for me.
