Life & Work with Pierce Kafka of Virginia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pierce Kafka.

Hi Pierce, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started making videos as a kid, and that early passion for storytelling eventually grew into a career in both filmmaking and marketing. I co-founded Kafka Media Group, a public relations and marketing company, while continuing to pursue my own film projects. My first feature film, Contradiction, is a psychological thriller made on a zero-dollar budget over more than a decade. This year, the film screened at the Richmond International Film Festival, where it received the Indie Spirit Award, and I had the opportunity to connect with Richmond’s creative community.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I had a difficult childhood, but what got me through it was focusing on the future I wanted to build. I learned to be deliberate and patient, trusting that consistent hard work and resourcefulness would compound into something meaningful over time. That same mindset carried me through building Kafka Media Group and making Contradiction. It’s been a long road, but I genuinely enjoy the process of doing the little things right every day.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m the CEO and Creative Director of Kafka Media Group, an integrated marketing and development company. My latest creative project is Contradiction, a psychological thriller I wrote and directed over 16 years with a production budget of zero dollars. Making a feature film without money required unconventional solutions at nearly every stage, but I believe storytelling is defined by perspective, not budget.

At Kafka Media Group, our team helps businesses tell compelling stories through publicity, marketing, and creative production. While filmmaking and marketing may seem like different worlds, both are ultimately about understanding an audience and creating something that connects with people. I think what sets my work apart is combining creative ambition with practical resourcefulness, finding ways to make ambitious ideas happen without waiting for ideal circumstances.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I’ve been fortunate to have teachers who encouraged me to explore my creativity, especially through video and storytelling. Contradiction is another great example of what happens when people believe in an idea. Friends, family, and fellow creatives donated their time and talents because they believed in the story we were telling. The film simply wouldn’t exist without them.

I’m equally grateful for the team we’ve built at Kafka Media Group. We’re very deliberate about who we work with, and that chemistry has created a culture where we support one another, share resources, and find creative ways to collaborate. Seeing our team come together at the film screenings, celebrating in packed theaters, was especially meaningful. It’s a reminder that even the most personal creative accomplishments are rarely achieved alone.
