Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Dunn.
Hi Rachel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started small with a basic Canon camera, shooting whenever I could while also working part-time in a family owned restaurant. What began as something simple quickly became something meaningful.
Creating images that made other people happy and made me so happy too. Over time, that passion grew into what I do today. I’m a family and event photographer who sees the imperfections as something that shouldn’t be edited or “fixed”. But celebrated.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was hard, it’s so easy to compare yourself to other photographers and styles. How it’s a profession where things are always changing and editing there is always something new to learn. And burn out is so real! But I’m seeing that for my life outside of this it’s so important to me to put my kids first. And I’d rather serve a few clients and have a balance.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in family and event photography. I love working with couples for elopements, and maternity sessions too. I am so proud of how I made the choice to be affordable, I grew up in poverty so making what I do accessible to everyone is huge. I also study ASL and am a parent to kids on the spectrum for Autism and ADHD. So this has helped my clients feel more comfortable during sessions.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
That my business grew from a place that was pretty dark, I started this when I left my previous marriage. It was from domestic violence, and it literally saved my life. That I have been in a body that weighed 260lbs all the way to 170. I think having these life experiences has shaped how I go into sessions. Very low pressure and just fun.
