Life & Work with Sally Rose Monnes of Virginia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sally Rose Monnes.

Hi Sally Rose, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a country-queer musician, activist, and self-defense instructor. I am nonbinary, and my pronouns are they/them. My two musical projects are my solo project “Sally Rose” and my band “Shagwüf”. I run a grassroots nonprofit organization called Fight Like A GRRRL Club, and we provide free self-defense training to folks in need.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a country queer, I have faced some challenges living in a very small, rural area with little to no representation of queerness. Although it’s not something I grew up seeing around me, it brings me joy to know that the younger generation is advocating for a safer tomorrow for queer folks.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My upcoming album “Feral” is a departure from both my traditional solo records and my punk band Shagwüf. Below is a description of my upcoming album.

Feral is a musical work of art born into an era of personal and political grief. Sally Rose, a country-queer songsmith and activist chooses joy as an act of resistance. This album is as aggressive as it is playful and as heavy as it is tender. One-third of the psych-rock band Shagwüf, Sally Rose shows off their musical flexibility in Feral. Produced and co-written by Jake Cochran (Illiterate Light), this collaboration lit Sally Rose ablaze to create something radically unbridled. Feral features striking cast Palmyra, Wes Parker and Illiterate Light. A voice of connection in the face of division, Sally Rose’s Feral is a force of nature that this world aches for.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love living in the woods and having unlimited access to nature. I love being close to my family. However, it can be difficult to find like-minded folks who embrace and celebrate my ideologies as a progressive, nonbinary person.
