Life & Work with Theresa Shiflett of Virginia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa Shiflett.

Hi Theresa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My mother wanted to buy the shop in 2005. She knew flowers but not how to run a business so I helped her and got involved. I had to quit my job to help her because I had bitten off more than I could chew but I figured it out. She died after owning the shop for 3 years. I have moved the business to a larger building and we continue to grow! 20 years old this year!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I really did not know anything about running a business. I had to figure it out along the way. Paying taxes is the easy part. Separating business and personal and doing what is right for the business is not always easy. Firing people is not my strong suit.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We are known for our large gift shop and the speciality items that we can deliver along with the typical plants, flowers and balloons. We are next to a local bakery so we can also grab cakes, cupcakes and cookies to deliver. Our website is larger than most florist in the county and we host our own website. Very proud of that!

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I like the location of Fredericksburg being right in the middle of stafford and Spotsylvania county. Allows us a large demographic area to serve and delivery to. We also have a lot of military in our area and so the recession has not as impactful here.
Of course I hate the traffic the most!
