Today we’d like to introduce you to Arlette Simmons.
Hi Arlette, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Arlette Simmons is a wife, mother, and CEO of Clinical Services LLC, and a Licensed Professional Counselor in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Hailing originally from the Caribbean Islands of Trinidad and Tobago but raised in her beloved Brooklyn, New York, and now lives in Suffolk, Virginia. Arlette is a proud alumnus of Virginia State University earning a Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in Mass Communication. She also holds a Master of Science in Professional Counseling from Grand Canyon University. I hold licenses in Professional Counseling in the States of VA, TX, NC & SC. I am also a Certified sex offender treatment provider and Board certified as a National Certified Counselor and a Certified Clinical Mental health Counselor.
In 2014 an idea that came to me having worked in mental health for 15 years that i had the opportunity to do a little bit differently if i had full control and my own practice with services that mean something to me.
On September 11, 2019, Clinical Services, LLC was born after watching that year’s September 11 tributes on television with my family, who is from New York. Unfortunately, when [9/11] occurred, my brother was trapped in Manhattan for a while and my mom was also working in Manhattan and thankfully her job was not that far from the bridge, so she was able to walk over. We have a lot of memories attached to that day. The vision of Clinical Services, LLC became clearer and became official.
I am married to my college sweetheart and have 2 kids a boy and a girl.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Some of the struggles came from the large amount of unidentified obstacles i was not aware of in getting to become a licensed individual.
Total residency hours: 3,400 hours of supervised work experience.Face-to-face client contact: At least 2,000 hours of direct client interaction.Supervision hours: A minimum of 200 hours of face-to-face supervision (with at least 100 hours provided by a board-approved LPC).Timeframe: The residency must take between 21 months and 4 years to finish
Doing this while trying to earn a living and work at getting the required residency hours can be more than difficult. I worked 2 full time jobs for a year. starting a business and then gettin hit with covid shut downs a week after signing a lease. building clients and getting a core group of dependable staff while pregnant. Getting covid while pregnant and having my son come a entire trimester early and spending almost 3 months . So building a business from the ground up while being a NICU mom. Current dealing with insurance companies that don’t want to pay or places under cutting paymentm all while youhave to show up to help people.
