Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlie Hoffman.
Charlie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
From a very young age, I was drawn to film in any form. Movies, TV, animation, shorts etc. it was so much more than just a passion for me. I am so grateful, and I feel so blessed, as to have found what I love to do so young. I truly believe it is part of God’s plan for my life. As soon as I was able, I asked my mom and dad so many questions about how to act in and be a part of these movies and shows. They were supportive and gladly showed me examples of some of their favorite shows, movies and movie musicals. My dad always referred to them as “classics.” I quickly found that every genre is essential to storytelling and I fell in love with all of them. I started dancing locally with my best friend and sister, Mary Cate Hoffman. From there it was an easy transition to the stage for plays and musicals. I fell in love with the stage. I performed in local college plays and musicals, as well as community theatre for years and years. My sister found she had the same calling, and we began to travel and work together on many shows, together. Soon, I entered local commercials and tv shows. I started training professionally in singing, dancing, acting onstage and on camera. Our training took place in New York and Los Angeles and I worked on different shorts and tv pilots, in these places as well, often alongside Mary Cate. We have filmed in many different states throughout the country and found ourselves moving out to Los Angeles for work. In turn, people began to call us “The Hoffman Twins.” We have been incredibly blessed to have met and worked with many talented artists over the course of our careers. Grateful doesn’t even begin to cover it.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t, but I have a very hard time believing that anyone has had an easy life. People think if we get this or if we get that, it will make life easier, but it’s a falsehood. We all struggle with any number of things and I think as soon as we acknowledge that, it leads us to a place of sympathy, understanding and community. We also owe it to eachother to rise above the things that come against us and be sure that we leave this place, and any room, better than we’ve found it. Anyone around us could be going through anything such as grief, hardships, or things we don’t understand. Have grace, and keep in mind that when we face hard times that it’s no excuse for us to fall into that and treat those around us differently. Existance isn’t always so black and white. These highs and lows are something people have experienced throughout all time. Much of it, led to creating some phenomenal works of art. No matter who you are, you have or will face all kinds of struggles, trials, blessings, and miracles. That is what makes art so beautiful, life too. I feel blessed that my parents solidified my relationship with Jesus at such a young age, He has been my foundation in all that I do. So when the temporary things aren’t how I want them to be, I am still so grateful for what He has done for me, for all of us. I know the best is yet to come.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an actor first and I’ve found personally that so many different fields of art are tied into that. If I’m required to sing or dance, it still requires some form of acting. Its expression of truth in a circumstance that’s real for others but not us. Acting is something that’s used for everything. It’s a part of existing and I find it to be beautiful! I wouldn’t say I am proud, but surely blessed! I have been unbelievably blessed in everything that I have been able to do. Every project, and every day that I have here with wonderful people like you. Everybody has something to say and to be a part of telling that story for so many different people has been such an honor for me through every experience.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Honestly all of them. Every single experience shaped me to be the person that I am today, and I’m still learning. I wouldn’t trade any of it good or bad. I do particularly love days that I have been able to do what I love performing on film and stage. I also love the memories of travelling, Christmases, easy Sundays with family at church and days on the beach with my family and friends! I love most of all that having a childlike faith is required of us in so many different facets of life. It’s truly a blessing to be able to view the world, myself, and others in this way.
