Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Kime.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Big Walker Lookout was built by my grandparents, Stuart and Abigail (Abbie) Kime. It started out as a little roadside diner and while Stuart built, Abbie ran the restaurant and store. They expanded to a full service restaurant and gift shop. Stuart built the first 50′ of the observation tower himself and contracted the second 50′ to be completed. At one time, there was a sky lift that went across the road and up the mountain to another observation area. Before Interstate 77 was completed, Hwy 52 was the only route from Ohio to Florida and there were travelers all the time.
Today we have our Country Store with handmade crafts from local artists, books by local authors, and Mountain Top Music with local musicians on the porch every Saturday and Sunday, May through October. The observation tower is open for climbing and viewing enjoyment. We serve Nathan’s all beef hotdogs and Homestead Creamery ice cream. We are a nice spot with beautiful views, off the beaten path. A chance to slow down and relax.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When Interstate 77 went through, everyone went that way instead of the “old road” and our business decreased significantly. COVID didn’t help either.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Big Walker Lookout & BW Country Store?
Big Walker Lookout is a roadside tourist attraction and country store. While we do have souvenirs, we specialize in local artists, authors, and musicians.
From our tower, you see the most beautiful 360 degree views of the national forest and rich farm land. “Only the birds can see more”
We’ve been in business for 80 years, owned by the same family with 3rd generation operating it.
Local music, authors, and artists on the porch every Saturday and Sunday, May through October. Open year around, only closed Thanksgiving and Christmas. Best ice cream in the state!
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My Grandparents, Stuart and Abbie Kime for having the dream and the drive to build it.
My Parents, Ron and Dee Kime for carrying on the business after my grandparents passed.
They all taught me the rewards of hard work, passion for what you do, and determination.
