Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayy Kirks.
Hi Jayy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Jayy and I have been a photographer for going on 5 years now! I am a wife, mom of 4 (16, 13, 12, and 2) and a Marine Corps veteran. I live in central Virginia but I was born and raised in The Lone Star State. My photography journey started because my 12 and 13 year old played golf competitively and I wanted to get better photos of them than I was getting with my phone. So I bought a starter camera and started following them around the course. Then, when I started editing and doing it more, I decided I really enjoyed it. I took some free family and maternity sessions. Now fast forward and it is something that I have built a whole business around and have won several awards for.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not lol About 2 years in I got pregnant with our fourth baby and ended up being admitted to the hospital at 30 weeks and delivering a 3lb 11 oz little boy at 31 weeks. I had to put everything to the side while he fought in the NICU for almost 2 months and even after he came home. Starting back up again was pretty slow at first but I pushed on and made it back even better!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My photography business is Jayybird’s Photography and I am based in Central VA. I specialize in weddings, families, and seniors and occasionally do sports as well. The thing I am most proud of is that I have built this business from the ground up with only the support of my husband and my clients. And there were lots of bumps and curve balls along the way that I had to navigate while building a successful business. I love capturing the little moments that people don’t really think of. Some of my clients favorite photos are the ones they didn’t even know they wanted.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
To keep pushing no matter what. Like I mentioned before, there has been a lot that has tried to get in my way and stop me. Everything from heath issues during pregnancy to personal legal issues in family court. Just keep going and never let anyone tell you that you can’t accomplish your dream. At the end of the day, I want my kids to know that you can be successful no matter what comes your way as long as you’re willing to work hard.
