Meet Juliya of Virginia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juliya.

Hi Juliya, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was originally adopted from Ukraine. When I came to the states I had a lot of health issues my parents were sorting out. I was diagnosed with 7 different diagnosis – one including cerebral palsy. Mainly due to the way my bone developed and how I was walking. I ended up not having central palsy and was treated extensively for my walking. Leading me to my first operation at age 10. My middle-high school was filled with injuries and my 20s was filled with surgery. I’ve had 6 operation total. I was officially diagnosed with EDS. This story is truly the path to my career. I spent so much time in physical therapy, I got a job there. My surgeries led me to pursue nursing school. My love for fitness made me combine them all into a profession I loved. I now train women who have had the same struggle as me, come into strength and transform their health.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Some of the struggles originally was my health. It derailed alot of plans. As I was in college, I already had two operations. As I worked full time, my health issues would get in the way or make my symptoms worse. I loved being a personal trainer but felt I wasn’t able to sustain it in a corporate gym level. My prayers were answered when a gym was opening up in the area asking me to be a part of it – as an independent. Allowing me to fully start my personal trainer buisness the way that I wanted and have autonomy over schedule and clients!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am specialized in strength training for individuals who are hypermobile or have EDS. It is a huge population of people that are not getting proper instruction. Most programs or trainers are not knowledgeable on this, and it often leads to a lot of injury, pain , or frustration from a client. A lot of individuals have suffered a lot of injury or surgeries, but still know they need to be strong but not sure how to approach. Including an immune and nervous system component too. I’m super proud of the awareness and education that is surfacing more for this population and myself!

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I took a major risk, leaving my corporate job and jumping in with a gym whose doors were not even open. (Being started by a 19 year old as well). A lot of people discouraged my choice to leave a huge company to go to a gym that may not even last. However, I truly had been praying for an oppurtunity as the area did not have many for trainers. I was then reached out to on social media by the new gym owner – and knew it was an answered prayer. It made it very easy to make this choice. I walked away from security and really took a risk on this gym and myself to build something.
