Meet Keaton Schilling of Virginia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keaton Schilling.

Keaton, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
We’re two 17-year-old entrepreneurs and proud owners of Chasing Green Lawn Services, LLC. What started as a small idea at 13 years old has grown into a business built on hard work, persistence, and the support of our community.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like most 13-year-olds, we faced challenges from the very beginning. We didn’t have driver’s licenses, work trucks, or commercial equipment. In the early days, we used a lawn tractor to pull a small yard trailer loaded with our push mowers from job to job. At 15, I bought my first truck before I was even legally allowed to drive it — that’s how committed we were to building this business and preparing for its future.

We also spent countless hours researching lawn care, learning about turf health, planting, blooming cycles, seasonal timing, and proper property maintenance. As the business began to grow, we quickly realized there was much more to running a company than just cutting grass. With help from our parents, we learned how to properly establish a business, obtain insurance, manage banking, and operate professionally and responsibly.

Because this community helped us get started, we believe strongly in giving back whenever we can. We’re proud to be the first student sponsors at our high school and supporters of the annual Mulch Run.

We also provide free lawn care in certain situations for elderly residents, abandoned properties, or individuals facing health challenges who may not be able to maintain their yards. We believe a well-kept property does more than just look good — it strengthens neighborhoods, improves curb appeal, and helps protect home values.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Today, we’re proud of how far we’ve come together as both friends and business owners. We now own two trucks and nearly $30,000 worth of lawn equipment. This is something we once could only dream about as 13-year-olds pushing mowers through the neighborhood. We use to get waves and cheers from other lawn companies as we passed them on our 8 mile an hour tractor.

We’re especially proud to serve our school and community as the first student sponsors in our high school’s history and the first students to sponsor our school’s annual Mulch Run. In fact, the sponsorship program had to be updated to allow student sponsors because no students had ever contributed at that level before.

As our business has grown, we’ve also been able to create opportunities for others. During busy seasons, we hire members of our lacrosse team to work alongside us when jobs become overwhelming. The community supported us when we were just kids trying to start something of our own, and we believe it’s important to give back whenever we can.

That mindset is reflected in our motto: “Teen Owned, Community Grown.” Our parents taught us early on that success means nothing if you don’t use it to help others, and that’s something we carry with us every day, both in business and in life.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
As mentioned giving back to the community.
