Meet Kim Nguyen of Kevin Socola Films LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Nguyen.

Hi Kim, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into photography and filmmaking didn’t start with weddings — it started on YouTube.

I began as a YouTuber and filmmaker, creating short films and music videos. That’s where I first fell in love with visual storytelling — the way a single frame, a sound, or a moment of silence could move someone. I spent years learning the craft through personal projects, and that creative foundation still shapes how I see the world today.

In 2020, I was invited by 9193 Studio to join their team as a wedding videographer. That experience changed everything. Shooting weddings taught me something filmmaking alone couldn’t — how to capture real emotion as it happens, with no second takes. Every wedding I shot deepened my respect for the work, and for the couples trusting their most important day to a camera.

After a few years of gaining experience and refining my eye, I decided to start my own business. Kevin Socola Films has been running for two years now, and I’m proud to work alongside an incredible team — Vinh Nguyen, our main photographer; Khang Ho, our second photographer; and Thanh Nguyen, our makeup artist. Each of them brings something irreplaceable to the work we do.

Today, KSF isn’t just about weddings. We also specialize in studio portraits, family sessions, and maternity photography — basically, any milestone worth remembering. Our style stays the same across all of it: cinematic, emotional, and honest. We don’t stage moments. We wait for them, and then we protect them.

Looking back, every chapter — the YouTube years, the music videos, the team at 9193, and now KSF — has built on the last. I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be, and I’m still learning every shoot.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Honestly, no — it hasn’t been a smooth road, and I think that’s true for anyone building something from the ground up.

The biggest challenge for me has been language. English is my second language, and when you’re working in a creative industry where communication is everything — talking to couples about their vision, writing emails, pitching yourself to new clients, doing interviews like this one — every conversation feels like an extra hurdle. In the beginning, I worried a lot about how I sounded, whether I was explaining things clearly, whether clients would trust me as much as someone who grew up speaking English their whole life.

On top of that, breaking into the American wedding market wasn’t easy. The U.S. wedding industry is competitive, well-established, and built on referrals, reviews, and reputation — things you can’t shortcut. When you’re new, when your name isn’t familiar, and when you’re working in your second language, you have to prove yourself twice as hard for every booking.

What got me through it was just adapting. I leaned into the work itself — letting the films and photos speak for me when my words couldn’t. I learned how to communicate with couples through visuals, through care, through showing up early and over-delivering. Over time, the language barrier became less of a wall and more of a perspective. Being bilingual actually became a strength, especially with couples who share a similar background.

The road wasn’t smooth, but every bump along the way taught me something I couldn’t have learned otherwise. And I’m grateful for it.

We’ve been impressed with Kevin Socola Films LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Kevin Socola Films LLC is a wedding and lifestyle photography and videography studio based in the DMV area (DC, Maryland, Virginia). We specialize in wedding photography and videography, but we also serve couples and families through studio portraits, family sessions, and maternity shoots — basically, any milestone worth holding onto.

What we’re known for is a cinematic, emotional, and understated style. We don’t stage moments or chase trends. We wait for the real ones — the glance, the laugh, the quiet tear — and we protect them. Couples tell us our films feel like films, not highlight reels, and that’s the highest compliment we can get.

A few things set us apart:

First, my background isn’t traditional wedding industry. I came from YouTube and music video filmmaking, so I bring a cinematic eye to every shoot, whether it’s a wedding day or a maternity session.

Second, we deliver a 1-minute teaser film to every couple within 24 to 48 hours of their wedding day. That emotional high right after the wedding is sacred, and we want our couples to be able to share it while it’s still fresh.

Third, our team is small and intentional. I work alongside Vinh Nguyen, our main photographer; Khang Ho, our second photographer; and Thanh Nguyen, our makeup artist. Every person on the team is hand-picked, and we operate like a creative family — not a vendor list.

What I’m most proud of, brand-wise, is that KSF doesn’t feel like a business pretending to be art. It feels like art that happens to be a business. Every couple we serve, every family portrait we deliver, every maternity session we shoot — they’re all built on the same belief: people deserve to feel the moment again every time they press play or open the album.

If there’s one thing I’d want readers to know, it’s this: when you choose KSF, you’re not just hiring a photographer or videographer. You’re hiring a storyteller who treats your day like the only day.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The quality that’s mattered most to my success is adaptability.

My journey wasn’t a straight line. I started as a YouTuber making short films and music videos, then transitioned into wedding videography with 9193 Studio in 2020, and eventually built Kevin Socola Films into what it is today. Every step required me to adapt — to new tools, new clients, a new industry, and even a new language.

English is my second language, and building a wedding business in the American market meant adapting constantly. Adapting how I communicated with clients. Adapting my creative style to fit different cultures, different ceremonies, different expectations. Adapting my workflow as the team grew.

What I’ve learned is that adaptability isn’t about changing who you are. It’s about staying open enough to grow, while staying grounded in what makes your work yours. That mindset has carried me through every chapter of KSF, and I think it’ll carry me through whatever comes next.
