Today we’d like to introduce you to Lori Carter.
Hi Lori, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was in a 8 year abusive relationship. For years I was in denial of what abuse really was. My first bout with domestic violence, he pushed me down the steps. He made me believe that i tripped down the steps. Manipulation played a huge part in our relationship. It was my son at the very end that made me realize I had a reason to live for him and myself. After years of therapy I started a non profit, the beautiful Movement, Empowering Women Of All Walks Of Life To Love Their Inner Beauty
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
After my abusive relationship I lived like their weren’t any problems. I lived in denial. I was very fearful of loud noises. Always looking over my shoulder. Always afraid that someone was going to kill me
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Ive worked in the telecommunications field for 40 years where I recently retired. Ive also been in the tax industry for 10 years. Currently I have my non profit and im a travel agent
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Id love to share if you have been in this situation or any situation that has altered your life, seek therapy. Therapy saved my life. I was tired of walking around with a fake smile. Therapy allowed me to rebuild my self. Therapy will be life long as often times you may have a trigger or two and you need to know how to deal with them.
Id also like to share i have two beautiful grandchildren who i love. They allow me to do things differently that I did with my son. I get a second chance.
My son and I had an amazing relationship. I did the best I could being a single mom. I do regret the times I lied to him that his dad was coming to get him,or leaving Christmas gifts from “daddy’s santa”, etc when there was none of that. Id advice any parent to be honest with your children so you dont put a strain on your relationship. Your children could look at you as a liar even though you were in protection mood.
My life today is a ongoing journey on the yellow brick road. There is life after abuse as long as you have the guidance of therapy. I must admit I attempted to start a new relationship but I found myself wanting to be the abuser. What I found myself doing was being in protection mood. If I was presented something I would turn it into the person trying to hurt me so I would go in protection mood. Wanting to protect myself thinking someone was going to abuse me. That was a challenge.
