Today we’d like to introduce you to Marquis Cureton.
Hi Marquis, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Seems like yesterday. I started very humbly. I worked at a nursery for about 23 seasons consecutively during that time. I was really looking for my way in life career wise and happened to stumble into Lawncare and landscape via Chris Champion got on with him initially is doing hedge trimming pruning majority of bed works since I had some experiencing the Nursery and come to find out that I wasn’t too bad at it. I’ve always paid attention to detail and like seeing things from beginning to end projects, so with Lawncare and Landscaping coming into a property making the proper changes adjustments beautification, and the process it just made sense to you know to continue on with this. Great great compliment to Chris Champion because it was because of him that I was able to pursue Lawncare he let me used the hair trimmers that he had provided me to do the job for him. All that has Sherman improving works, and I pretty much allow me to go ahead and set forth to do my own thing as long as I were able to, you know able to keep up with the work from him as well and really that’s the start of everything I invested in a truck started with just myself doing hedge trimming bed cleanups and from there eventually got in to buy one Honda lawnmower learn how to cut grass with Chris Champion so from there you know I’m never going to lawnmower too, and I started it all very small. I only did bed so I only did hair trim and I pushed small yards and I was outside for seasons you know just sticking to the grind and getting up get into it. I remembered initially my goal was just to make $100 a day and if if I can line it up, where $100 on the schedule it was it was you know worth me being outside. From there, I just continued to work hard reinvesting any company learning all I could about Lawncare groundskeeping fully immerse myself you know and everything Lawncare everything is groundskeeping and just continue to work myself well but made my social media pretty much primarily all about Lawncare everything I did was about Lawncare and over the course of the last 10 years. We’ve been extremely blessed to be a six figure company probably year 5 to 6 in and in progressively climbing further into the six figures every year, so I’m super tremendously thankful for a Christian Champion so all my early clients it’s who everyone that ever trusted you know be coming to the yard to get any type of work done. I’ve met some great people since doing Lawncare in it by no mistake on where I am today via first and foremost God secondly, even my family support my hard work and the great support of the clients I’ve had over the years.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some of the obstacles for me along the way, probably first and foremost was just the lack of experience having in the field of course I really had to make up for the years. I’ve hadn’t come originally from Conde, California. I didn’t ask. They grow up cutting grass grow up doing Lawncare. It wasn’t something prevalent in my area however YouTube serves all and via YouTube as well as working side-by-side with Chris Champion I was able to retain acquire and retain a lot of knowledge that I was able to execute in field.
I would say the second obstacle obviously will probably be fun funding. You’d be surprised honestly how expensive Lawncare equipment machines or I had no idea until I got started in further into the industry how much these items cost and the cost of maintenance for these items so with that being said, obviously over the last 11 years, I was able to acquire a little bit of funding from the SBA, but the rest of everything has been hard work and completely pay and bought with cash by me so I would say that that’s one of the biggest obstacles you spend a lot of it. People are not aware of the probably the overhead cost that comes with Lawncare the more Line you’re able to do the more costly it becomes
Lastly, I would like to say obstacle. I think it’s been both a obstacle and both of benefit for me and I will be saying possible race barriers are just a raised demographic within a Lawncare community typically in a Lawncare community you typically see it ran a controlled, mostly in this area by middle-age white men, older white men and for myself when I was getting in I obviously Chris Champion was a white guy it showed me all the ropes and everything I need to know and I don’t think it’s any type of any type of discrimination. That’s stopping anybody from getting to the industry. I think it’s more so just of information shared amongst the communities maybe a possible career Lawncare maintenance and Lawncare was not nothing. I was really aware of and then when you get out here and the majority of the other companies that had the companies the leaders of companies, the owners of companies are usually white guys. You’re not necessarily you don’t see yourself out in the field as an owner, so it was a little bit of trepidation about that. Also, sometimes you know if I’m gonna be wanted in some areas but man it has been an absolute pleasant tree. I mean if you show up you do the work you stand on the work, you’re discipline you’re polite forthcoming enthused about your work. I don’t think racist ever got the way of anything I’ve done, however I thought it was an obstacle coming in just as far as the landscape of perceived of what you make it be getting into but bandit has been absolute wonderful and I think people respect that I’ve learned to respect hard work in years, especially of hard work and communication and then you’re just being a good person. It goes a long way people really respect it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Well, I’m a professional Lawncare provider in the Hampton Rose area. We currently serviced about 148 homes and commercial contract across the 757. We make sure that your grounds are always remarkable and up and looking pristine whether that’s be for a sharp edges nice stripes in the grass. We do all of the vegetation and planting to keep yards in business fronts looking beautiful. We will make sure that it saves the trash, free area and really just maintain the grounds so whether residential or commercial your ground speaks to the high integrity and esteemed of only yourself would’ve also the esteem and integrity of the clients that you have company going on your grounds
What are your plans for the future?
Plans for the future would include to continue to push MJs Landscaping as far as I can reach hopefully able to break more ground more thresholds and create something that is truly a long-standing grounds, maintenance lawn care maintenance business here in the 757. I’d also like my children’s children’s children to be able to benefit from the work I put in here today so I receive my boys and future generations are either running or having some something to do with it just pushing MJs Landscaping into the next level in the next level in the next level as far as we can get it to go to be a true prominent fixture in the community here in 757
