Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Miller.
Hi Michelle, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I care deeply about accuracy, credibility, and helping others. I kept seeing strong messages lose trust because of small but important errors. What drew me specifically to proofreading is that many writers don’t need their voice changed; they need a trusted final set of eyes so they can share their message with confidence. I love working on self-help and nonfiction in particular because it serves both sides: it helps authors present their work professionally and helps readers receive guidance from sources they can trust. That’s what led me to build my skills and start working with nonfiction authors.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Building a business takes a lot of time, dedication, and consistency, and as a freelancer, there’s no guarantee of steady work every month. That uncertainty has been one of the biggest challenges.
During slower seasons, I’ve had to learn to return to my “why”—remembering that the work I do helps both writers and readers. Marketing has also been a stretch for me. I don’t naturally enjoy putting myself out there, but I’ve learned that reaching out is part of serving the people who actually need my skills. Those challenges have pushed me to grow as both a proofreader and a business owner.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a professional proofreader specializing in nonfiction, particularly self-help and practical resources. My role is to be the last set of eyes on a manuscript. I make sure the manuscript is clear, consistent, and polished so the author’s message comes through with credibility and confidence.
I’m most proud of seeing books I’ve proofread on store shelves and performing well online. There’s something deeply meaningful about knowing readers are learning from and trusting a book I helped prepare for publication.
What sets me apart is how intentionally I build trust with my clients. I take time to understand their goals, their audience, and the problem their book is meant to solve. I don’t just proofread pages; I protect the author’s message and the reader’s experience. That mindset shapes how I work and why clients feel confident handing their final manuscript to me.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something that often surprises people is that I genuinely love working behind the scenes. I’ve always been more of the quiet, behind-the-scenes girl rather than someone who wants to be front and center.
Proofreading fits that part of me perfectly. I get to support writers, strengthen their work, and help their message reach readers clearly without needing recognition for it. There’s a sense of fulfillment for me in knowing I played a role in someone else’s success, even if my name isn’t included in the book.
