Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Jefferson-Kearse.
Hi Tiffany, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey with Jay Kay’s Tutoring started with my passion for education and my belief that every child can learn when given the right support, encouragement, and opportunities. As an elementary school teacher, I’ve seen firsthand how much of a difference individualized attention can make in a child’s academic growth and confidence.
After years of working in education, I wanted to take my passion beyond the classroom and create something of my own that would allow me to reach more students and meet their individual learning needs. That vision became Jay Kay’s Tutoring, where I provide personalized academic support to help students strengthen their reading and math skills, receive homework assistance, and build the confidence they need to succeed.
My journey hasn’t always been easy, but my love for teaching and my commitment to helping children grow have kept me going. For me, tutoring is about more than improving grades; it’s about helping children believe in themselves and recognize their potential. That’s why my motto is “Building Confident Learners One Student at a Time.” I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I’m excited about continuing to grow Jay Kay’s Tutoring and make a lasting impact on the students and families I serve.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, the journey hasn’t always been smooth. Like many small business owners, I’ve faced challenges with growing my business, reaching new families, managing the financial responsibilities that come with entrepreneurship, and balancing business ownership with being a full-time teacher, wife, and mother. There have been moments when things didn’t go as planned, and I’ve had to remind myself why I started in the first place.
One of my biggest challenges has been getting Jay Kay’s Tutoring in front of more families who could benefit from my services. I know the value of what I offer, but building a business takes time, consistency, and resources. Despite the obstacles, I refuse to let the difficult seasons define my journey. Instead, I use them as opportunities to learn, grow, and become more intentional about my vision. My passion for education and my desire to make a difference in children’s lives continue to push me forward. I believe that every challenge is teaching me something I will need for the next level of my business.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Jay Kay’s Tutoring is an educational tutoring business focused on helping students build strong academic foundations and become confident, independent learners. As an experienced elementary school teacher with a background in educational leadership, I specialize in individualized instruction, particularly in early literacy, reading, foundational math skills, and homework support. I believe every child learns differently, so I work to meet students where they are academically and create learning experiences that fit their individual needs.
What I’m most proud of is being able to combine my passion for teaching with my desire to make a difference beyond the traditional classroom. I don’t just want students to learn a skill; I want them to understand it, feel good about their progress, and develop the confidence to keep trying even when learning becomes challenging.
What sets Jay Kay’s Tutoring apart is the personal connection I build with my students and families. As a classroom teacher, I understand academic expectations, learning challenges, and the importance of meeting students at their current level while helping them grow. I bring patience, creativity, encouragement, and intentional instruction to every session. My goal is to create a supportive environment where students feel safe making mistakes, asking questions, and celebrating their progress. At Jay Kay’s Tutoring, success is about more than grades—it’s about building confidence, developing skills, and helping every child recognize their potential. That’s the heart behind my motto: “Building Confident Learners One Student at a Time.”
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite childhood memories was going to the Rushmere Volunteer Fire Department with my cousins to play school. I always wanted to be the teacher because, even as a little girl, I knew that was what I wanted to be when I grew up. I would take on the role of the teacher whenever we played, never imagining just how meaningful those little moments would become. Looking back now, it makes me smile because that little girl was already walking in the direction of her purpose. Today, I’m living out that childhood dream as a teacher and business owner of Jay Kay’s Tutoring. It’s a beautiful reminder that sometimes the things we dream about as children are the very things we’re meant to do!
