Today we’d like to introduce you to Yadira Soto.
Yadira, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It all started a few years ago when I was on the hunt for natural, lightweight, and unique earrings for myself and our little one. I’ve always loved earrings, but for years I struggled with headaches whenever I wore heavy earrings. I still wanted to enjoy wearing them, but I was struggling to find something that felt like me and that I could comfortably wear.
After searching high and low and not finding quite what I was looking for, that’s when the idea was born to create our own, lightweight, cute, simple, and earthy designs. What began as a personal quest to find something for myself soon grew into a passion to create and share these pieces with family and friends. Pink Marmota grew very naturally from there. There wasn’t a big business plan behind it. We started creating, experimenting, learning, and finding our own style along the way. Our little one became part of the journey too, which made it even more special.
Today, we are still a little place where we keep creating and making with lots of love. All of our online orders are made to order, so I get to enjoy every piece and every order, and I put all my heart into bringing them to life. I love that each order still feels personal.
We’ve also grown within our community and through collaborations with other small businesses, both locally and outside of Virginia. We’ve met wonderful people along the way, and that sense of connection and community has become a really special part of Pink Marmota.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road, and I think that’s part of the journey of owning a small business. We’ve had, and continue to have, a lot of trial and error. We learn something new every day, and many times we are simply figuring things out as we go. Neither of us comes from a business background, so we’ve had to educate ourselves about everything from marketing and pricing to social media and actually running a business. It can feel overwhelming at times, but it has also been a great opportunity to learn. Finding the right balance between the business, our family, our regular jobs, and everyday life has probably been one of our biggest challenges. Because Pink Marmota is something we genuinely enjoy, sometimes it doesn’t even feel like work, which can also make it difficult to know when to stop. And, of course, there have been moments of self-doubt. You wonder if people will like what you create, if you’re doing things the right way, or if the business will continue to grow. We’ve had to learn to be patient with ourselves and accept that not every idea will work and not everything has to be perfect. We’re still figuring things out, but I think that’s part of what makes our journey meaningful.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Most people don’t know this, but I’m a geologist by profession and also a maker at heart. I believe that life has endless possibilities, and that’s something I always tell my daughter.
What I’m most proud of is our family journey and being able to create designs for adults and little ones that can be part of a special moment they share together; designs that feel unique, have personality, bring a smile, light up a room, or even spark a conversation.
I love that our little one gets to see the creating, learning, mistakes, exciting moments, and all the work in between. I want her to grow up knowing that she doesn’t have to fit into just one box.
I’m also proud that Pink Marmota has become a little space where everyone is welcome. We want it to feel inclusive, respectful, safe, and empathetic. For us, it’s about being authentic, creating with love, having fun, and making genuine connections with others along the way.
