Rising Stars: Meet Kinnari Sahay of Virginia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kinnari Sahay.

Hi Kinnari, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey has been shaped by resilience, reinvention, and a deep curiosity about people and their stories. I moved from India to the United States in 2012, settling in the New York City area with a dream, a strong work ethic, and the excitement—and uncertainty—that comes with starting over in a new country. Like many immigrants, I had to navigate cultural differences, build a professional network from scratch, and find my place while staying connected to my roots.
Professionally, I built my career in Human Resources, combining my education in HR and Psychology with a passion for helping people and organizations thrive. Over the years, I’ve worked across talent management, employee experience, organizational development, and business partnering, which has given me a front-row seat to the power of human connection and growth.
At the same time, I’ve always had a creative side. What began as a creative outlet on the side—capturing fashion, beauty, family life, travel, and everyday moments—slowly evolved into content creation. Through my platform, I’ve been able to connect with women from diverse backgrounds, many of whom are balancing careers, motherhood, personal growth, and cultural identity just as I am.
One of the most defining chapters of my life has been my journey to motherhood. After experiencing significant challenges along the way, becoming a mother gave me a new perspective on perseverance, gratitude, and authenticity. It encouraged me to share more honestly about life’s highs and lows and to embrace imperfection.
Over the years, I’ve lived in different places, including New Jersey and now the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, each move bringing new opportunities to grow personally and professionally. Today, I balance multiple roles—HR professional, content creator, wife, mother, and proud immigrant. Looking back, my path has been anything but linear, but every challenge, transition, and new beginning has contributed to the person I am today.
If there’s one theme that ties my story together, it’s the belief that growth happens when we’re willing to embrace change. From moving halfway across the world to building a career, raising a family, and creating a platform that reflects who I am, every step has taught me that it’s possible to honor where you come from while continuously evolving into who you’re meant to become.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but looking back, the challenges have shaped who I am today.

One of the biggest transitions was moving from India to the United States in 2012. While it was exciting, it also came with the realities many immigrants face. For the first couple of years, I was on a dependent visa and didn’t have a work permit. As someone who had always been ambitious and career-driven, it was difficult to suddenly find myself unable to work. It challenged my sense of identity and forced me to rethink how I defined success and self-worth.

Beyond the professional hurdles, there was also the emotional side of starting over. I left behind my family, lifelong friends, familiar traditions, and the comfort of knowing exactly where I belonged. Building a new life in a new country takes time. There were moments of loneliness, homesickness, and cultural adjustment. Learning the unspoken social norms, building friendships as an adult, and creating a support system from scratch wasn’t always easy.

Another deeply personal challenge was my fertility journey. My husband and I faced years of uncertainty, loss, and heartbreak before becoming parents. It was a period that tested my emotional strength in ways I never imagined. There were moments when it felt like everyone around me was moving forward while I was standing still. But that journey taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of hope even when the outcome is uncertain.
Career-wise, there were also periods of rebuilding. After finally obtaining work authorization, I had to re-establish myself professionally in a new country, adapt to a different workplace culture, and prove myself all over again. More recently, relocations and life transitions have required me to reinvent myself multiple times, both personally and professionally.

What helped me through all of it was focusing on growth rather than perfection. Every challenge—whether it was navigating immigration, overcoming loneliness, rebuilding a career, or facing infertility—taught me something valuable about perseverance and adaptability.

Today, when I look at my life as a professional, content creator, wife, mother, and immigrant, I don’t see the struggles as detours. I see them as the experiences that gave me empathy, perspective, and strength. They remind me that growth often happens during the chapters we would never have chosen, but later become grateful for.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Professionally, I am an HR leader with a background in Human Resources, Organizational Psychology, and Talent Management.

Over the years, I’ve worked across employee relations, talent development, organizational design, performance management, and employee experience. What I enjoy most about HR is that it sits at the intersection of business and people. I’ve had the opportunity to build talent programs from the ground up, improve onboarding experiences, support organizational transformations, and help leaders create workplaces where people can do their best work.

What I’m most proud of in my HR career is the ability to create meaningful impact beyond policies and processes. Whether it’s helping an employee navigate a challenging situation, coaching a leader, or designing programs that support growth and engagement, I believe people remember how you made them feel. My approach has always been to combine empathy with business strategy, ensuring that both employees and organizations succeed.

Alongside my corporate career, I am also the creator behind The Kinnari Edit, a lifestyle platform where I share fashion, beauty, motherhood, travel, wellness, and personal growth. What started as a creative outlet has evolved into a space where I connect with a community of women navigating similar life stages—balancing careers, family, identity, and self-care.

What sets The Kinnari Edit apart is authenticity. I don’t believe in presenting a perfectly curated version of life. Instead, I share the realities behind the highlights—the lessons from career transitions, the experience of building a life as an immigrant, the challenges of infertility and motherhood, and the ongoing journey of personal growth. My audience connects not only with the fashion and lifestyle content but also with the stories and conversations behind it.
Interestingly, my HR background and content creation work complement each other. Both are rooted in understanding people, building relationships, and creating meaningful connections. One allows me to impact organizations and employees, while the other allows me to inspire and connect with individuals on a more personal level.

If there is one thing I’m most proud of, it’s that I’ve never limited myself to a single identity. I’m an HR professional, a creator, a mother, a wife, and an immigrant—and I’ve learned that embracing all of those roles has allowed me to create a career and life that feels both purposeful and authentic.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
If I had to choose one quality that has been most important to my success, it would be resilience and grit.

My journey has involved multiple reinventions—moving from India to the United States, navigating years without a work permit, rebuilding my career in a new country, facing personal challenges such as infertility, and adapting to major life transitions like motherhood and relocation. None of those experiences followed a straight path, and many required patience, persistence, and the ability to keep moving forward despite uncertainty.

What resilience means to me isn’t simply pushing through difficulties. It’s the ability to adapt, learn, and find opportunities for growth in challenging situations. It’s being willing to start over when necessary, embrace change, and remain optimistic even when the outcome isn’t guaranteed.

I also believe resilience is closely tied to curiosity and continuous learning. Throughout my career in HR and my work as a content creator, I’ve never been afraid to step outside my comfort zone, acquire new skills, or explore new paths. That mindset has allowed me to evolve professionally and personally while staying true to who I am.

Looking back, many of the opportunities I’m most grateful for today came from moments that initially felt like setbacks. Resilience and grit helped me view those challenges not as roadblocks, but as stepping stones toward growth. It’s a quality that continues to guide me in every role I play—as a professional, creator, mother, and immigrant.
