Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Robillard.
Hi Rachel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been a naturalist at heart. Much of my life has been spent obsessing over the outdoors in one way or another. My first art form was photography, my original dream job was to be a photo journalist. I followed the advice of my family members and went to school for health and medicine instead. I worked in healthcare for several years out of college and found myself feeling burnt out. My sister actually suggested I try floral design since I had such an affinity for plants and gardens, so I began teaching myself to design. I worked in a retail flower shop cleaning buckets and answering phones until they trusted me to begin designing. From there I moved onto lead designer for a luxury wedding brand and left that position just under two years in to fully purse my own vision.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I do think it is a tremendous privilege to earn a living this way, but every job has its challenges. The hours can be tough. It’s a lot of early mornings and very, very late nights, long hours on your feet in between. On the job you can find yourself faced with unexpected weather patterns that hinder the execution of the design. It’s a much more physically laborious job than I think most people realize, something you don’t truly appreciate until you do it firsthand. I’ve heard often how fun it must be to “play with flowers all day” and while it is genuinely so joyful for me to do so, the job is much more than just playing with new blooms. I’m grateful for every obstacle that encourages our growth and adaptability as a brand and as professionals.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am the lead floral designer and founder of June Moon Florals, a brand I created to simplify the process of event floristry without compromising the quality of the designs as my experience in the space prior felt so needlessly complicated. Our style is adaptable. We’re able to hone in on each clients’ preferences so their event feels uniquely tailored to their vision. My style of design is contemporary, modern, and sculptural. I lean into asymmetry and disproportion, I like our pieces to feel odd and unexpected, something you’d linger to study a little longer. I am most proud of our team. I’m fortunate to have such a reliable community through the endeavor of starting my own business. It takes a village and I have an outstanding one to thank for their unfailing support in all the ways they have shown up for me and continue to do so. What sets us apart is the whole process. It’s simple to get connected, easy to continue the conversation, and stress free from start to finish. We take care of the details so our clients can enjoy their night and leave a lasting impression on their guests with unique, conversation worthy floral designs that feel more like art installations than traditional bouquets.
What matters most to you?
Trust. I care just as much about someone’s wedding day as they do. It’s extremely meaningful to me that someone trusts us with their investment and their vision, and it’s not something I take lightly. It’s very important to me that we execute on what is promised and exceed expectations in any way we can. I know that our clients are in good hands so we work to convey that through every step of the process.
